Greetings...I am brand new to this forum, and want to say hello, introduce myself, and start getting some advice & information
I'm seriously considering enrolling in a local CDL school, but am still in the "checking them out" phase. I live near Phoenix, AZ. Was recently laid off from large company where I'd worked for 14+ years, and am needing to "start over" with a new career, which is a little scary at 56 years of age. I am pretty sure I am going to get the CDL, it is something I have been wanting to do, and a career I've wanted to get into, for a very, very long time but have never pulled the trigger on it over the years for one reason or another...being laid off now seems to be the push to finally get it done.
Looking at the AIT school in Phoenix, but have not made a decision yet.
I have a lot of questions -- I'm going to start a thread in the "Questions from New Drivers" section. Is it better to put only one or two questions in a thread, and have multiple threads, or one great big one with a long list of questions?
As I said above, I'm 56 years old, worked in retail sales for a bit over 14 years. Served in the Marine Corps from 1977 to 1983.
Ok, so hello all...hoping to get some good use out of this forum, meet some people, and maybe see some of you down the road in the future.

Welcome to the forum. Best advice I can give is to do a search on here for that subject, more threads on it than you will want to read. Good luck in your venture.
Bsrlinmaz Thanks this. -
Phoenix area has some great trucking jobs. Knock on some doors with the local companies and ignore any ads that have "experience required" because many companies are bending their own hiring policies these days due to the shortage of quality applicants. Many companies look for drivers in your age bracket; they figure you've been around and mature and don't let the small stuff overwhelm you.
Ace Asphalt
Groendyke Transport
Reddaway
Saia LTL Freight
System Transport
Melton Truck Lines
Indian River Transport
Pride Transport
Schneider - has terminal in Phoenix; ask about their tanker division, good money in tankers.
There's 3 milk tanker companies around Phoenix area, but I don't remember the names.
Get all the endorsements plus a passport. If you want hazmat/tankers, get a TWIC card and Google for nearest TWIC office.
Start submitting applications the very first day of school.Last edited: Oct 3, 2014
