All they have to say is...
You can either consent or you can find employment elsewhere.

    Simple as that.
    There is no legal issue.

They are not forcing you to do anything because you have the choice to simply quit if you don't like the terms of employment.
And since no contract was signed in the first place, they can change the conditions any time they choose.

The thing is, there is a thing called electrical tape.
It is great for covering things like a camera lens that points inside the truck, or an audio pickup.

Another thing is, I don't think these things will become standard equipment in trucks.
There already is a driver shortage. How bad do you think it will be if we had Big Brother in all the trucks?
As soon as there was a mass exodus of drivers because of this, it would go away SO quickly!

Dash cams viewing the road, and in our control - yes.
Anything else and I will find another line of work. Even McD's, since they are starting to pay 15 bucks an hour for flipping burgers!

If Swift were the first to install driver facing camera's in all of their trucks, Swift would be the first big trucking company to go out of business, very quickly.
Because... NO ONE really NEEDS this job THAT badly!!!
We do it because we like it, pure and simple. If the 'liking' part is taken away, then why do it?

What the 'powers that be' MUST (as in, NEEDS to!) understand is, if that mass exodus of drivers happens there will be chaos in this country.
Nothing will get moved until the problem is fixed.
Every store and warehouse and factory will be empty until the problem is fixed.

And we all know how long it takes to repeal something once it is in place.
And even longer, to get back the workers after they have left.

    It's a catch-22, for sure.
We could all stop driving to fight it, but then we would not have a job because no one would be hiring because no one had anything to sell.

    Come to think of it...
Truckers may be the most powerful group of people in the entire world.
All we have to do is stop doing what we do... and the entire world stops with us.

Of no other group of people on this planet can that be said.

Too bad we are not really organized in that way.
    If we were...

And, come to think of it...

Wouldn't that make for a really GREAT movie?

The problem with that is the company can get you for tampering with the equipment.

OTOH, if you happen to get some overspray from your 409/Fantastik/whatever on the lens, and you didn't notice that to clean it off, and it happens a few more times, the image of any video taken will be so blurry as to be unusable.

Hi moosetek, good copy on the electrical tape. Works great for "check engine" or "ABS" light. ( get it A-"BS" light):biggrin_2559:

Those laws do not apply the same way at places of business where companies can and do monitor employee phone conversations all the time. All it takes is one signature on a consent form. Companies also monitor EVERYTHING employees do on their computer including any personal email they may open while at work. Happens all the time. Perfectly legal.

The bedroom part is not the drivers seat. Besides that, the inward facing camera can easily be rigged to turn off when the yellow knob is pulled. And if you're a tin foil hat paranoid type, pull the curtain when you're getting changed. That's what its there for.

Its legal because there is no law against it. Simple as that.

You mean like the mass exodus that was going to happen when elogs came along?

So what you're saying is if your company installs a camera which watches you the entire time you're working, you will leave the industry and go work in fast food where you will have a camera watching you the entire time you're working. That makes sense.

The cameras in fast food joints aren't focused in on a single workers face for 10 hours a day, flagging events the computer thinks is that worker screwing up.

Not to mention, these cameras may be operating 24/7. Recording everything we do and say at all times.
Would any of us agree to being video recorded in our private homes 24/7? I doubt it.
And company truck or not, this truck is my home for all but ~3 days a month.

Even if the camera was only on during my drive time, it would be a constant distraction to me knowing that someone could be watching every move I make at any given time.
And that would make me a less safe driver.

Like I said, if this comes into my truck I will find employment elsewhere.
