I've been around long enough to know the basics, but I always enjoy trying other peoples tricks/tips. Please share some!

I'll start with some windshield tips:

The windshield is where I see most of our newest drivers have issues...They have never seen so many ways Mother Nature can F'up your window!

    • Fix any nicks, this is the season a little chip will turn to a full blown crack. Even if your boss is cheap and won't pay for a proffesional, its easy with Permatex or 3M products at local auto parts store $10-20
    • Don't just clean the windshield @ fuel island; you've likely put 100k+ miles since it was cleaned properly.
[*=2]Use any cleaning product u like (after we're done that will change)
[*=2]Outside and inside especially if your a smoker
[*=2]Use newspaper for streak free clean up.
[*=2]Outside use #0000 steel wool for stubborn spots <---I was afraid at first, but it actually polishes the glass on its own. (DO NOT use any number less ie: #000, or use on anything but the glass!) Bonus tip: a bag of 8 lasts forever, and if your ever in the dog house, this will clean hard water stains from shower glass, while wife tried every chemical on earth . :biggrin_25525:
    • Now we treat the windshield (Micro-fiber towel works best)
      • KW Cajun deserves credit for Aquapel <---Best ever, blows Rain X away. Most will have to buy online here is link http://www.amazon.com/Aquapel-88625...e=UTF8&qid=1412484021&sr=8-9&keywords=aquapel
      • For the rest that still use RainX; get the bottle, not the wipes.
        • Throw the directions away
        • Turn on defroster full heat/full fan if cold (Dry faster)
        • apply first coat in circular overlapping motion
          • let dry
        • apply second coat in circular overlapping motion atop the first coat.
        • use a wet rag and wipe clean [instructions say dry; too much work compared to result]
      • Treat all the rubber surrounding windshield, and wipers.
Final tip, when snow begins to build and pack; consider outside temp vs defroster... defrost may take care of issues driving while temp is near freezing, the opposite is true in extreme cold. You may heat the windshield and make snow stick while if you put floor heat on, the windshied would allow the snow to blow away. <---use defrost wisely

Put sun visors down when defroster is on. Makes them work twice as good. Old timer told me this a few years ago.

When climbing snow or ice covered grades keep the rpms high. That way if one of the drive tires brakes traction it won't spin for long before the rev limiter kicks in and slows the tire down.

When driving out in the Rockies, make sure you know how to install the chains BEFORE you're stuck on a Pass in a foot of snow... that's never a good time or place to learn how to put chains on for the first time.

When I first started trucking I put my chains on when at home in the summer time to practice. After doing it I was holy crap, this is hard!

Don't change lanes on a bridge. Practice crossing (straight) bridges without any control input such as steering or braking.

Make lane changes gradually, more of a drift than a turn. These you can practice doing now so it will become muscle memory by the time its winter.

Avoid running bunched up in packs when the weather conditions deteriorate. Drop back or take a ramp where you can go straight at the stop and come back on.
