You pretty much need it to do a tug test. And for doing cop turns in icy parking lots ;-)

They also come in handy to lock the brakes when you want to slide the trailer axles.

Paid my own way. Indentured servitude to a company for 1 year not worth it. The Gov't will pay for your schooling if you are eligible, but something to do with EI eligibility. Takes a couple months to get the EI paperwork sorted, 'cause the conservative gov't too busy bribing people with $300,000 plane tickets instead of hiring gov't employees.

Im 24 hours into my course so far. As a total greenhorn, who never worked a manual transmission, its been very difficult for me. Hence my paying for the 104 hour course. If you have trucking experience or are mechanically inclined you can probably make do with the 30/60/80 hour courses.

The instructors are all veteran drivers and know the industry inside/out. They wont coddle you around, dont show up expecting to be babied through the course. Its hard work and they will challenge you. As a school its TRU's job not only to hire professional drivers, but also professional instructors! I feel TRU has done a good job of doing this.

    Allo, Garnotte.
Go West, Young Lady. Come dressed fro work. CSA Steel Toes with 8 inch uppers. Pack your personal vehicle like you are ready to move. Put your personal affairs in order back home.

You will discover that the courses are more industry specific in The Patch and taught with local flavour.
    Bienvenue.

Anyone have any experience working through a recruiting group for west opportunities in the oil patch? Living in Ontario with the hope to head west for a few years I'm not sure of the most productive way to do it. With a family back here, I don't believe that just showing up in the province would be effective.

    Thoughts???

The one piece of advice that I'll start with is DO NOT fall for one of those Kijiji adds that offer you all your tickets AND a job if you would just give them $2,000 ......... Do your homework .... starting with this thread on page 1 ....

A recruiter called The Talent Group came in to Durham College in August during the first week of my course. I've worked with recruiters before in my corporate career, but am not sure of this industry. I figure a recruiter takes the risk out of a job search when looking out of province.

I've seen the Kijiji adds and this firm is definitely a legit recruiter.
