I would skip the large fleet companies if you can and start combing through Craigslist for a small outfit that will work with you.

Thanks again Chinatown. Right now, I'll look into any possibilities and I appreciate your advice.

Thanks allisonisatranny, I have heard both good and bad about Swift (but nothing like Werner and England) and so I'll look also further into what they might offer me. Like you said, it's just for 6-9mos which I noticed every company in Craig's List wanted to get started. Any of the real "money" companies wanted 2-years experience.

Hey Jaguar115, that's cool that your recommendation actually came with a company and specific person to call. I know that to really get a good job... sometimes it takes a personal recommendation to speak with a certain recruiter/employee and I appreciate that info.Last edited by a moderator: Oct 11, 2014

Brandonpdx, it all started last week with Craig's List. Every "mom-and-pop's company" I checked wanted that dreaded combination of words... "1-2yrs of verifiable experience within the past 3-5yrs." So, that got me looking online and that's how I found this trucker's site. So definitely, after finally getting experience, I'll head out with one of those more specialized/personable companies because I'll finally have recent experience.
You know what hit me funny though. I used to drive for Werner. I was told by their recruiter that all I needed was to get a company to give me 30-days behind the wheel and then they'd take me back. I couldn't believe that only 30-days stood between my not driving and having a job. However, maybe I shouldn't head back with Werner this time. I have heard a lot more negative concerning them than I did back in 2005.Chinatown Thanks this. -
does your state have a local jobs board online????
that's how i got back into OTR. some dinky company had a posting on our local news channel websight which also does classifieds.
EVERYONE wanted 1 - 2 years OTR. i didn't think that dinky company would even give me the time of day. boss called 10 minutes after i submitted app.Diesel&Dust Thanks this. -
Yes, if the company has an online application, it's better to submit that before any phone calls. Submit the application then wait at least a day to follow up with phone call. This gives them something to look at and some idea about who they are talking to on the phone.

try Watkins and Shepard. Unless they've changed their policy, if you can pass their 10-day orientation they give to new drivers they will take you. They have a section here as well. I started with them right out of driving school and they taught me quite a bit.
