No, the owner does have a son working in the company, but from everything I know of him, and from my experience with him, he's hardowrking and has to prove himself. There is always going to be the risk of problems as the father gets older and retires, but they have a pretty good core of people running the business. And I'm alert for anything like that to happen. I won't be toe first person to jump ship when things aren't right, but I won't be the last rat off either.

Nothing wrong with finding the right place and staying there. I really enjoy hauling dry bulk products, and just a week ago went to our school for hauling plastics. That gives me some more flexibility than what I had before. I have always said that the key to doing this (or any other work) is find a place where you enjoy what you are doing, and the rest of it will all fall into place. If you found that running for the Pumpkin brigade, then more power to you.

    Hello.
for the last 22 years I've been a deskbound tech help dude with Avaya (formerly Lucent formerly AT&T) . My job may be heading for Indonesia this year without me. I may get a severence if I volunteer to leave. I could pay off my bills and go into truck driving. I'm 51, kids all grown up and gone its just me and my wife (49). I'm tired of getting beat up by computer whiz kids half my age and I don't like this business anymore. I've checked into Sage. The union I'm in (CWA) will pay for about half of the tuition and fees and all the books as part of my leaving (or staying for that matter). Even though I've been chained to a desk for over 2 decaces, I'm in great condition and can lift 100 lbs easily etc. etc. I'm clean from drugs, clean dmv etc. Is this a reasonable choice for a guy my age? My wife thinks of it as being "couped up" in a cab for hours. Where do I go for a reality check before I jump in? Any encouragement or discouragement is carefully weighed. Thanks.

Your age is not really an issue. How much are you expecting to make your first year? Im not trying to discourage you from considering driving
a truck, but just trying to give you the facts. First year earnings are only 25-30k a year and that's before taxes and road expenses. In other words, the first year is just basically a training year. The trucking industry has been getting more and more corrupt over the years. It might not exactly be what you expect it to be. After 2 years your earnings will be around 50k a year. The CDL itself and 2 years experience can be a valuable tool,if you decide long-haul driving isn't for you. Since your record is clean you wouldn't have a problem getting a job after graduating from Sage. Here are the companies to stay away from.
Swift,Cr. England,Covenant,Werner,Stevens,Kllm,Central ref, U.s. Express,Usa truck. Here are the companies to consider. Crete,Sunflower,Roehl,Marten,Schneider. Good Luck.

Yeah, that is all true. But I also worked for Greg but had no major problems (for a non-driver dispatcher!)..............................................

Yes there are PLENTY of reasons to blame old GW! Iraq no war plan just the same same old Friday cruise night down Bagdad Blvd looking for mines!:laughing3: Also he projects a sense of "non-accountability", and his contributors Wal-Mart, Swift, Schneider International all want to bring in thousands of foreigners(H1-B Visa program) so they can fill their empty trucks and haul freight for cheaper wages than you or me the independent contractors can. Also lets not forget the 1,598 miles of unsecured border that he keeps saying we don't have the money to build a fence, but he sure finds a way to keep the war on terror in Iraq going right? The big box carriers have adopted the same policies as the President greed at all costs! Jesus said it soo well in Matthew: "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul? What would a man pay for his soul?"

I just hope America will be able to recover from the damage this President and for that matter the cool aid sucking Republicans in the Congress have done to this wonderful country of ours(?) Some how the future looks pretty grim right now I am not confident that we can.:pale: pull out of this mess in time.

    Really??
Do you also consider that those "BIG Corporations" have been bringing in "foreign" workers since the Clinton Administration? Schnieder wanted to bring thousands of "trainees" from Puerto Rico long before Bush was elected
They started comming March 2000. (Bush was elected Nov 2000)
    http://www.landlinemag.com/Archives/2000/May2000/Coming_To_America.html

Neither party (Democratic or Republican) has done very much to secure the border. BOTH parties look at the hispanics as future voters and pander to the illegals. And you should realize that it is the Democrats that have blocked (or attempted to block) the money for the "FENCE".

Your "BLAME" of GWB is very shortsighted and erronious.

aviator, are you suiggesting that we put in another lying bleeding heart liberal such as Bill the whoremaster Clinton,or his stupid mate Hillary.Maybe a dodo John kerry who managed to marry a wealthy Heinz ketchup owner, after practially commiting treason against his own country.getting three purple hearts for three minor scratches in Nam,and getting his sorry butt out of there in less than 4 months.Or perhaps Ted the alcoholic Kennedy,or should I say the drunk. This is not the kind of people I want running our country. No Thanks aviator,I will stick with the Conservative party.:laughing3:
