Can anybody tell me what the written testing is like for the Knight Transportation orientation? I don't mind the road test etc., just hate the written stuff.

Also, does anybody work for them in the the SE region and do you like working for them, etc.? Can they get you home on weekends?

Could not help you as far as the written test, the last OTR company I drove for required haz-mat training and testing every two years. The last time I took it they gave a vidio presentation, handed me the test along with the answer sheet. needless to say I aced it the first time.. :D

Yes. Every two years is the minimum requirement for Haz-Mat testing.

if you mean the painted red tractors/trailers with a "knight horsehead" as the logo, then all i know is that a co-worker of mine used to work for them and he liked them. he quit only because he got married and moved away from their travel lanes, making it next to impossible to get home to his new bride.

Knight is a large Phoenix, Az based outfit with terminals throughout the US. They have several divisions and most recently cranked up a stand alone reefer division. They seem to be well regarded and all of their equipment I have ever seen seems to be well maintained. They do govern their trucks at 62 mph but you shouldn't let that bother you. The time you save with ezpass, prepass, etc make up for it. I've considered them in the past myself. Rumor has it that there was some connection between their founder and Swift many moons ago, but he broke off the arrangement and began Knight Transportation. I have no proof of that and am only repeating a rumor I heard sometime ago. I've never really heard anything bad about them. Take care & good luck!

HeavyD, I'm confused by your post. You say that Jerry Moyes at Swift was looking at Knight at one time, and then turned his nose up. He then went on to form "Knight Transportation".

Are there TWO Knights? There may be. I think I've seen other trucks out there with the name "Knight" written on them.

The Knight trucks I remember being the most common were red and white. I think this is the outfit that Jerry started. With such a tie to Swift, I'd never work at this particular "Knight". And I'd say that even if I didn't know about Knight's trucks being governed at 62.

I DO have a problem with your claim that EZ-Pass, toll passes, etc "make up" for being held on that slow leash. Having toll passes in one's truck doesn't even come close to making up for even one day driving at 62, especially when one could be driving 68, 70, 72,......And some of those "faster" trucks have toll passes as well.

No, Tip...I wasn't implying Jerry. I was referring to the owner of Knight. He and Jerry were entertaining doing business together but didn't. Knight trucks are governed. Personally, I don't believe there is a need for ANY big truck to be set faster than 70 mph. I don't know your level of experience or operating area but on the east coast; Virginia on up, you're lucky to maintain anaverage of 50 - 56 mph over the course of an operational day. It's just my personal opinion that there isn't enough of a difference between 62mph and 68/70 mph governed truck for it to be a consideration of who I'm going to work for. Mine sat on cruise at 65 mph; capable of triple digits but why? Too much risk. Just sit back and ride...enjoy the view and what we do, 10-4?
