What kind of work are you looking to do? Flatbed, Dry van, Tanker? You listed companies that handle these types of freight. As one other poster mentioned, why don't you look into the oilfields since you live in Texas. You will make double or triple the money as you would OTR and be home more. Most oilfield companies want you to have at least 1 year, but it doesn't hurt to call and ask since it seems all of them are hurting for drivers. Just my 2 cents anyway

I got a job offer from McElroy. They are a flatbed company and will be my very first trucking company. Just curious, do you guys know better flatbed companies than McElroy? Thank you.

I was thinking of applying to Melton and Maverick. They both seem to have a good student driver program. Or are all beginning flatbed companies about the same? thanks.

Stay far away from maverick ,they run a auto only fleet(some trucks you can switch it to a 6 speed ) . Its best to be able to use a manual well since alot of the good jobs will grade you on your pre-hire test drive and compare you to others.

Chinatown: Sure appreciate all of the valuable info you offer across much of the forum! Recent CDL school grad. Heading to orientation this weekend. Never was exposed to 45 degree backing between 2 trailers (in confined 90x90 space). Only learned straight back, offset and parallel, and tested out on those for CDL. Can you (or anyone else) offer step by step instructions on 45, as we will be required to perform that at orientation in order to be hired, and drive with trainer for final field work? I have watched some YouTube videos, but most do not offer step by step, so I can familiarize what the approximate markers should be. Thanks for any help offered!

I started solo Sept 1st and was assigned a 2010....never had a problem with it.....but 2 weeks ago I got a call to come pick up a new truck. I have a brand new 2015 Peterbilt 579....Had 54 miles on it when I pulled out of the yard. All OTR trucks are Peterbuilts with fridge, apus, and inverters.
Also...they announced a new pay raise starting Nov 15th...You can make .50 a mile plus .5 more for hazmatBossbandit, needmoney and ZephyrSoCal Thank this. -
Who do you have to sleep with to get on with Magnum? Seems like a carrier that paid that well would have some pretty strict hiring conditions.
