Good morning, everybody
I am an honorably discharged veteran scouting out a private CDL school in San Diego county to attend VERY soon. (I could start as soon as tomorrow.) I plan to get my Class A plus all endorsements, except for Passenger. Does anyone here have positive or negative experience with any trucking school in San Diego county? If so, please share. Do companies really care which school you attended? One company that emailed me did recommend a few schools in my area.
I want to stay out OTR as much as possible to optimize my paycheck, except for one specific weekend a month only (military drill weekend). Which companies do you recommend? Which companies have the best pay for brand new drivers? Which companies are the best to get me back on time for my one monthly drill weekend?
If you are assigned to a reserve or National Guard unit anywhere in SoCal, please contact me.
If you are a MRAP or MATV driver, please contact me. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, everybodyThanks.
San Diego schools, best companies for new drivers, reservists, MRAP or MATV drivers

Melton Truck Lines has a veterans program. Check with them about the weekend drill. I think they require a 160 hr. CDL school, but they can tell you for sure.
ZephyrSoCal Thanks this. -
Thanks, Chinatown. As a matter of fact, I contacted several companies over a week ago. Melton was one of the ones that replied. I emailed a recruiter a bunch of questions a couple days ago.
I didn't realize that companies look at the number of hours. I went to visit Western Truck School yesterday and the program I can start soon is 160 hours. Do a lot of companies hire only new graduates of 160 hour schools? -
Seems like most companies prefer 160 hr. school.
Some companies don't care as long as you complete a school.
Navajo Express requires 140 hr. school.
A few drivers on here went to a 20 hr. school and still found jobs.
I always recommend 160 hrs. though so the new driver will have more options. -
Thanks, Chinatown. I didn't know about this until today.

I read about a 240- and 600-hour program.
