I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it usually takes to receive a WIA Grant. I checked on it a week and half ago and they got a copy of my license and social security number for the background check but I still haven't heard anything back. I still haven't turned my application in (supposed to wait until everything comes back) , just wondering how long it usually takes to get the grant? I've also not taken the TABE assessment yet. Thanks for the help guys.

It was four years ago now so not sure and each State handles it differently. They do not want to give you the grant and will keep putting up obstacles. I had everything ready and research to back up my information. I just kept pushing and did not take no for an answer. I recall the whole process taking about three weeks I think

I'm not sure why it's taking so long for you. Maybe it's the way it's handled in your state. I started the process about two and a half weeks ago. I did an orientation (10 minute video) online and then immediately called to set up an appointment. When I went to the appointment, they gave me a packet to fill out and scheduled a career scope test and a tabe test. I did good on the tabe test, but they were trying to convince me to take another program instead, no matter how much I stressed that I want to drive a truck and I still don't know why that is. After all of that, I got a copy of my lifetime MVR (actually only 11 years) and took it to my local driving school. They email something to the WIA people letting them know I'm accepted and I start on the 10th of November.

I went to school with the WIA grant. Now this was out of the state of AZ. It took about 6 weeks total. There was the initial interview, then a class on how it works. I had to go up there 2 or 3 times a week every week until right at the end. They made me do classes on filling out an application, how to search for jobs ect. by week 4 all i had to do is get all my paperwork together, submit it, and then meet with my case worker. He reviewed all the paperwork asked a few questions and hit it with the magical approved stamp. He called the school right then and said i could start that next week. I think what took so long was you had to make appointments for ever freaking thing. So it was a matter of when the next class would start or when so n so would be available.

How difficult is the TABE test? I have a high school diploma but it's been eight years since then. Also, what is the career scope test? I also had to list a bunch of trucking companies that were hiring on my application. It seems like a long process and Kentucky only pays half which is 2000 but still it's worth it I guess, because the school is 4000.

What did you do Craig, just keep calling them and asking? Sorry I tried to reply with a quote but messed it up.

It was easy to me. I got 12.9 in every subject except one (11.7 in that one). If you can pass a GED, you can do great on the TABE. It's just basic stuff like Math (a bit of Algebra being the hardest, but only basic pre-Algebra stuff really) and Reading Comprehension. The Career Scope was just questions about what you like to see what kind of careers might suit you. They ask things like.."The thought of testing water for organisms interests me - click yes, no or not sure". WIA had nothing to do with filling out job applications here. They leave that up to the truck driving school to help you with. The school is about 5900 and WIA is paying it all.

That and they kept trying to tell me that truck driving was a bad idea. I came in with stats and research. I met with a couple of their pre-approved schools even before we were approved and just kept not accepting no form them.

They kept telling me the same here too. Kept trying to convince me that I should be a nurse...

It took about 4 weeks to get mine done in GA. Government stuff always moves slow and when you have two of them to deal with, unemployment office and the WIA office, it seems to take forever. Just stay in contact with them. The test are easy just basic math. If you can make sure your paycheck is correct then you will not have a problem . Good luck.
