This is an opportunity well worth looking into very carefully. it doesn't sound too good, sounds good. An opportunity to step up. Become a real trucker, not a company driver counting miles. It's time consuming dealing with brokers, getting your own loads. You'll want to select a lane that has freight at both ends and stay as close to it as possible.

As brokers start to know you and where you run, they'll start to call you. And you can meet shippers on a different footing; many really do care who hauls their freight. Dealing with you, they have more control over that, rather than leave it up to a broker.

Where I parked my company truck I met a young trucker. Has his own Volvo and dedicated daily run to St. Louis. Guy he worked for wanted out from under the truck, offered to sell it to him. He resisted. His boss persisted. Finally asked, 'what's the worst that could happen?'

He figured worst was he failed and gave the truck back to his boss. 'So what?' his boss said. Okay, so what, he thought. Now this was 3 years later. The first 6 months had some bumps and his boss let him some slack on the payments. Why? Because the boss wanted out from under the truck.

    Happy ending for both.

Really nice young kid, too. A credit to the profession.

The numbers don't seem right to me. You get 80% he gets 20%. How is he going to pay for the expense of the truck, insurance and maintenance on a mere 20%. Sounds fishy to me.

Thanks guys for the great feedback! My understanding is that the truck maintenance is paid by the owner. Some additional information, he and his wife currently run his company. They would be training my wife and I on finding loads to run so I wouldn't be going in completely blind. I have a baby on the way in December so I am not making any moves until she arrives, but I was thinking it may be worth my wife and I sitting down with him in January to get more details on what they are offering. If he doesn't answer his phone, it was probably a scam. If we have a sit down and everything sounds legit then maybe I will give it a shot. This is literally a brand new business this guy is starting, he wants to put on about 5 guys to run for him and grow the company, there are currently no other drivers in this company to get feedback from. Its a risk for sure.

First you have to ask 80% of what? 80% of $5.00a mile is great while 80% of $1.00 isn't good.

It appears you are looking for approval. Do what you want. But in my opinion this whole thing stinks. Think about this...A new baby will not leave your wife time to be searching loads for you. A brand new business finding 5 guys to put fuel in his trucks. Hmm, I think I will buy 5 trucks, but I don't have the work to go with it. Then find 5 suckers to put fuel in them out if their own pocket.

This deal stinks with a capital S!
