You can get the DOT# and your MC authority first,,to activate your authority you need insurance , you can get insurance before you buy the truck then notify your insurance company info about the truck, before your authority is activated your ins company must file your ins with the dot,,after your get your authority you have 30 days to file your ins with the dot,,after they activate your authority you must wait about 21 days before you can officially start hauling,, a good ins company at good prices is daily underwriters in Penn, you can apply for your dot # and authority online with the FMCSA. Remember to follow up with your ins company to make sure they file your ins with the FMCSA (DOT)

Don't forget all the other things you need to get done to pass your new entrant audit.

Good point Iron Pony,, the FMCSA website can tell you all you need to set up your files.
One important file is your vehicle maintenance file.. each vehicle file must have the vehicle ID ie: serial number of the vehicle,,a completed driver app even if you are the only driver, a copy of your driving record from your DMV, a copy of your long form DOT medical , copy of your insurance, copy of your authority, copy of your ifta, copy of your vehicle registration, all toll receipts , all your log books and fuel receipts, copies of all your manifests or bills of lading, copies of all your dot inspections, a list of driver and vehicle citations all this info is at the DOTs website,, log book dates and fuel receipt dates as other records must match,,CellNet Thanks this. -
Get process agents, get your UCA app in, join a drug testing consortium. You'll only have one chance to get through this... the FMCSA claims they are canceling authority for those who fail the audit. Oh yeah... don't forget all the tax accounts you have to start.
...are you sure you really want to do this??? -
You don't need either one of those if you are leasing onto a company.
-
If you are going to lease on to a company, you will NOT be getting a DOT or MC#. Those are only for motor carriers. As a leased on o/o, the company you lease to will be the motor carrier.
I would apply to the compnay you want to lease to first and get approved before buying the truck. Having the right work for the truck lined up is way more important than the actual purchase of the truck. When you buy the truck you will need physical damage insurance. When you sign your lease, you'll typically need to get bobtail insurance as well. The motor carrier will provide the rest of the insurance needed to operate on public roads. -
Yep... might be a good idea to settle on what you're going to be doing first.

What you mean 21 day?
I thought once your mc activated you can haul. No? -
Nope, it has to active and you have to wait for the MC Certification to come in mail, I believe you can also print it.
