Is it normal to go to a company sponsored CDL school but not work for that company?

You're welcome.Nothing wrong in my book with your friend quitting right after he got his CDL.But carriers don't think too kindly of the idea.

 

Don't know the answer to that. I think Celadon has their own bunkhouse on site. They just opened a new facility in Texas, so if you want the Texas oil fields, that would be the place to go. You may need a Texas CDL anyway, but not positive.

Just a suggestion... Don't forget about Community Colleges in your state that may offer the same training of a commercial school, but at a lower cost.

In Va, my state, Community college training is offered that is $3200 at Blue Ridge Community College.... much less than the $5200 mentioned earlier in this thread... up to 6 thousand at a commercial school is the norm.

 

Are you in West Virginia too? Boone county truck driving academy is actually really good. It's 5 weeks I believe and they do a little bit more than just get you ready to pass the test. I know the instructors will take you out in the mountains a lot. You won't be a super trucker when you're done of course but it's much better than most curriculum I've looked into. One of the instructors is a friend of the family, real nice guy and knows his stuff.
