Thanks for the quick reply nitrogen. I'll definitely consider that road, so thanks for the advice. But I'm way more interested in why you're turned off of vac truck work now. If you'd rather not discuss in public, feel free to PM me please. I am about 10 minutes away from starting my commute. As I do not do data on my phone, I will check in this evening. Have a good day all.

Try BNL out of Conklin 22/12 I think. Depends where they put you. Pays not too shabby driver told me all 12 hour shifts ot after 8. 30 an hour. Also clean harbours or Manatokan oilfield services. Foster creek divisions. Good shift good camps. Them are the only vac companies I'm familiar with all drivers seem happy when chatting work doesn't look back breaking.

Vac truck work is dirttyyyy. Climbing into tanks and cleaning them isn't my idea of fun for 30 bucks an hour lol I've got a couple friends who just started doing it and they had no previous experience. Most companies train because they want to cover there ##### too. Those same friends quickly moved over to the fluid hauling side of the company after doing vac trucks for 2 weeks btw

Ya I wouldn't do it either but for a new guy it would be a good start. Place I work it's very easy work. Not much tank cleaning mostly transferring fluids from tank to tank.

Hey belowspeedlimit, if you were starting over how would you approach the oil patch industry given these exact times that newbie' s are facing? I mean as a Class 1 driver with no experience in the oil field? And off road driving and such?

If you don't know anyone that can fast track you in it is tough. Old fashioned boots on the ground. Find a hot spot GP, red deer, bonnyville, lloydminster area. Be truthful when asked about experience but tell em your willing to learn. Be persistent and you'll find something.

Oilfield experience isn't an absolute must. If you have any experience at all there is work its not all off-road or bush trails. If you have 12 years experience and know what your doing doors will open.

Ok, so I'm back from my Enform training having used ETS & Ludec Transit to get there & back, and I have to say that it was a fun challenge. The 6 or 7 hours of a subject that could have been thoroughly covered in 3 made the day go by too slow. I have to say that if I had to do what Nate's describing, I'd be discouraged, but below has a point - not bad for a noob like me (I've been here under a year and a half, but this would be a lateral move from class 1 dry van day trip deliveries). And thanks for those suggestions below - I'm gonna start making a list of companies I can approach by some good suggestions here.

And I gotta ask Pinner something too... I'm not gonna complain about the vagueness of the comment & the fact that it LOOKS disrespectful (I know that it wasn't). I'm smart enough to figure that you're saying that cause you think it's easy to find an employer that will train you without experience. You might be right cause I haven't tried approaching anyone yet, and I'll test your theory too (although I could never prove being completely sane in all matters of life). But I posed a specific question this morning (although not fully spelled out which was my bad) that was about whether I could get into a Clean Harbours type environment in Ft Mac for 38 & change an hour (I just saw the ad last night I think) despite having none of the experience the ad demands. As for the garden variety $30 an hour type vac jobs, I'd rather just fluid transfer gig like below described. At 42 I too, would rather work smart than hard.

And of course concede that you're right, Pinner, about being crazy to pay for training that one of them will subsidize for me. I'll skip the course, and approach many to ask them for an opportunity to learn.

Thanks for all the advice you guys gave today. Have a great weekend. And I look forward to our next discussions. Cheers :)

I bookmarked some vac companies during my job search. I was leaving them for the end, after what I'd heard on this thread about it being tough and dirty work. I didn't end up applying to them, but here's some links:

Also, I'd be curious to hear a comparison of wages between Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray...

Also, I'm not into the whole fake it till you make it in this type of work, but I am a fan of aiming high. Not so high that you'll get laughed out the door, but there's a difference between "the ideal candidate will have...." and "all applicants MUST have..."
