S&T does the same. What is the garmin screen size? How do you choose your own route? If it's one of those rinky dinky things I wouldn't want it. Too cumbersome to trip plan/route plan.

If you haven't tried a netbook, you do you will wonder why you waited.

Yes, this is can be an issue if you get a screen that's too big. S&T 2007 version has a night mode which is good but it could be darker and that would be better. Some netbooks may go darker than others too.

i have a netbook. i have 10 inch tablets with gps, and i have 7 inch tablets without gps. (have to use my phone as a gps transmitter).

i also have the copilot for my laptop. again, using my phone as a gps transmitter.

i'm perfectly happy with the 4 inch screens. and with the recent updates, the images are more crisper.

OK good. You've used both and I have as well. What drove me nuts with the little ones was:
    1. Couldn't choose my route worth a darn. I was basically stuck with the route it gave me. Effing usless when you have to follow a permitted route for an OD load.
    2. Impossible to review the complete route start to finish in order to check every turn.

How do you manage that? Do you just accept the route you're given?

It says EX because I sold my truck last year, and then proceeded to trash my shoulder just before I was ready to go back to work. Hard to haul cars with one arm. I drove from '84 to '13, and may yet get another truck, but for now I'm managing the transportation side of an automotive ramp.

I can't even comprehend trying to use only an Atlas for even one trip, lol. Not when I know how accurate and helpful my GPS is. Doesn't help me in towns, doesn't help me find truck stops, doesn't give many exit numbers. Only time I ever use my Atlas is to see the area I'm going to if I'm curious or when I need to know how close it is to another city.

All the arguments about GPS getting you lost or taking bad turns, that's in small towns or in residential areas. They don't get you lost on US routes or Interstates, at least mine hasn't. So the part where they aren't perfect is in towns. Well, unless you're in one of the few towns with a very detailed atlas listing, the Atlas is USELESS. The best tool for finding a shipper is obviously directions and Google Earth. The thought of trying to read each street sign hoping I haven't missed my turn yet, that's ridiculous. In a big truck, I can't turn around if I miss my street. If you do things right with your GPS, you can usually have the local directions set up properly if you tinker with it a little.

If I had to do a trip right now with no GPS, I'd be nervous the entire time, lol. Tease me if you like, but it makes me feel calmer knowing my gps tells me that I'm on track, when my next turn is and I know that I'll get some help if I have a detour or screw up and take a wrong turn.

OTR isn't like what it used to be 30 years ago. How much more traffic is there? How much shorter was your trailer before?

There's no point in driving without a gps now. That's just holding onto the past.

With and OD load don't you run the route stated on the permit?

One of the most useful points of a GPS is the ability to notify you of upcoming turns. That would be even more beneficial when OD. His point was it's hard to force a route on the little ones with the tiny screen.

you input your address. then click on MY ROUTE. in the top right. is a drag route. click on that. and you can move your line. and zoom into the area you want to change your line. (towns).

you can alter your route to whatever and where ever you want.
