I am going to Denver driving along i-70 from Kansas.
I was trying to look up their chain law requirements but am not sure if I need to get chains or not.
The Colorado page says we are required to be able to chain up between mile 133 and 259.
Then a few lines down it says chains are required on all federal, state, and interstate highways.
I am just driving east to Denver then straight back west on I-70 back into Kansas.
Confused abouy Colorado chain law

Then you don't really need to worry about chains. You should carry them, but they are only required to be carried on i-70 between 133-259, if you are not in possession of chains it can be a $500 fine.
A Bug Thanks this. -
'Colorado State Law requires commercial vehicles, having four or more drive wheels, to carry chains to use on four wheels, between September 1st and May 31st when traveling on I-70, in either direction, between MP 133 (Dotsero) and MP 259 (Morrison). Dual Tire Chains are acceptable."
That is the only area you need to carry chains, Four singles, they don't require trailer chains.A Bug Thanks this. -
I believe from what I read it's a $50 fine plus a $17 surcharge if you are not carrying chains on I-70. If you drive without chains installed when the chain law is in effect it's $500 plus surcharge. If you drive without chains and block the roadway while chain law is in effect it's $1000 plus surcharge.tsavory, gntorres61, joseph1135 and 2 others Thank this.

Guess you didn't read the part about, from mile 168 to 259 requirement. www.cotrip.org/.

I think it's common knowledge when you say "I-70" in the context of CO chain law, we're talking about west of Denver going over the 3 hills. SteveP1977 seems to have the numbers right. Can't be holding up the tourists trying to get to the ski resorts to spend money. Many a driver has had some real bad times across there trying to pull those grades during major storms

Previous poster already addressed that point so I found it redundant to post it again

i've lived in CO and all i can say is if u see a sign or warning that tells u 2 put chains on u better pull over and get them on and that rule applies 2 every1 going through CO their very strict on their chain laws and their fines can go well above $2k 4 not haveing chains on
-
At TransAm, we don't chain. We avoid I70 and take I40. Glad not to have to deal with that.
-
the sign says TRUCKS MUST CARRY CHAINS BETWEEN SEPT 1. - MAY 31.
that sign resides at the state line on just about every state road INTO colorado.
op has the correct statement. "chains are required on all federal, state, and local highways." not just on the 70 through the rockies.
the strictest enforcement would happen to be on 70 between mp133 and mp259. as oldman says.
before any of you want to say you have no idea what your talking about. perhaps you should enter colorado on one of them state roads.
and doesn't denver head west from kansas and kansas would be east of denver?????
