I'm in my mid-40s now, but was a bit of a hellion in my younger days. I'm wondering if I'm even eligible to become a truck driver and haven't found any answers yet. I've applied for training with Prime, but haven't heard back from them yet. I was honest and told them that I had a DUI in 1994, which was deferred. A few years later I was arrested for driving on a suspended license and failure to provide insurance. Lost my license for 3 long years. Got caught with a roach in my ashtray around that time and was ordered to pay a $200 fine. I realized what a mess my life had become and I quit drinking. In the past 15 years, I've had 2 speeding tickets, the last one being about 7 years ago.

They asked about felony convictions and I haven't had any, so that was a no-brainer, however... they asked about misdemeanors and I said "no," but I'm not sure now if that's true. I mean, I suppose that driving on a suspended license was a misdemeanor? To be honest, I don't know what is or isn't. Maybe I should get a copy of my police record, but all of this stuff was 15-20 years ago and in a different state. How would one get all of that information together?

So, I'm sweating the fact that I was once a very bad girl and now that I'm a very middle-aged girl, I'm afraid that 25 year old me will screw me over yet again. How worried should I be about these past charges? Should I contact Prime and tell them that I'm not sure if I've been charged of a misdemeanor or not? Will anyone give me a break since we're looking at bad behavior from 2 decades ago or should I just set up a lemonade stand on the side of the road for a living instead?

If you have 15 years of clean history with only 2 tickets, you should be good, especially with no felonies. A misdemeanor, well the possession charge would classify as one. I think you would be good if this is what you really want to do. Just make sure that this is what you want to do and sound confident and give them all of the info up front. One thing you need to do too is they are going to want work history for at least the past 3 years (DOT requirement). What this means is if you have not worked you will need to provide W2 showing self employment, income from unemployment or some companies (like the one that I am going through now, Knight transportation) will just have you sign a paper and give references for some time lapses in between jobs or times of unemployment to verify you have not been out raising hell.

I think that you would be good to go and as long as you are honest, I don't see how you would not make it through.

As a long time reader of this forum I'll assume the majority will say "DUI, that shouldn't be a problem at a lot of companies after it has hit the ten year mark. A roach?! Are you referring to the devils weed?! If so we don't need your type out on the road!!"

in all seriousness, your past is probably far enough in the past to not cause you too much bother.

    Werner
    Western express
    PTL

Those three hire just about anyone ,unless you wrecked a COMMERICAL vechile before.

PTL does require some recent work history ,werner and western don't really care too much.

Check out WIA/state funding for a local CDL school.

I'm googling the state funding thing, but I'm hoping to hook up with a company like Prime (which is near my home) to get paid while I learn. I just don't have the money or the credit to get a school loan.

Please understand, I was Satan's lead farmer for a while. I would have listed this on my employment record, but the sneaky ####### refused to provide me with a W-4.

    I'll say it right now.

The kids are being soft on you because you're a girl.

If Prime doesn't take you, there are others that will. Submit some more applications.
Depends on how the application is worded concerning DUI, felony, etc. Does it ask "Have you ever?" or "Have you within the last 10 yrs?" and so on.

Celadon and Southern Refrigerated Transport provide CDL school and furnish hotel room and meals. They also provide transportation to get to their school. Check their websites and apply.

If companies ask for Social Security Card or Birth Certificate, they mean an original, not a photocopy. If you show up with photocopies, they may send you home.

There's also Wil-Trans and Trailiner Corp. in Springfield, MO but don't know about their lodging and meals.

Seriously though, a 20 year old DUI, and a minor posession charge shouldn't be a problem.

Get your out of state police record and disclose all relevant info.

Add a CV that demonstrates you've turned on the right track since.

Forget Mary Jane. She ain't welcomed in the industry.

    Good luck, smooth criminal.
