Best commercial GPS

I understand, but you have far too many posts like this:

Far too many are overly dependent on the GPS. So it froze up? He couldn't read the HUGE signs hanging over the freeway for the bridge. That is prime example of what occurs far too often: drivers are so dependent on the GPS telling them where to turn, they don't have the slightest clue where they are without it! All of you who preach 'GPS only' fail to consider that exact problem; the complete and utter inability to spatially orientate one's self without the #### machine.

 

I myself, as a civilian driver, not a professional, am one that relies too heavily on GPS. I realize it can be detrimental should the unit fail and that I really need to relearn to read maps

 

Overly dependant on GPS... Most likely. The argument presented seems to be that they should be avoided because they work fine most of the time, but will fail in rare occasion. I knowingly take that chance, but I'm also not an idiot.

As for the NYC example. I wouldn't trust my GPS in that area, and for around there, I would actually check my routing and make sure it's not doing anything crazy. You need to know where you're going in that area.

I will blindly follow my GPS if I'm not worried about how hard recovering from the small chance of failure will be. If I know I can't afford mistakes on a certain route/area, I get more proactive.

Also, almost every bad GPS story I've heard starts with missing a turn from the original GPS route. It can't make truck routes appear out of thin air.

I have used Copilot Truck Laptop edition, the Copilot stand alone GPS, Streets and Trips, and the Garmin Dezl 760. Copilot Truck made you pay extra for Canadian maps, but if you knew the GPS coordinates of your destination in Canada, it would route you correctly. So far, I'd say the Dezl 760 is the best one I've used.

 

The dezl series is probably best of the standalone GPS units. Streets and Trips got discontinued recently, unfortunately. :/ I thought it worked pretty well.

 

Do any of these gps units let you input your own route, or do you have to follow the one it lays out for you?

 

The Dezl lets you set waypoints between your start and end points, so, yes, you can set your own route.
