I always see guys adding their personal obligations, personal tax obligations, health insurance etc. These have nothing to do with evaluating the viability of a business. Personal items should be kept separate from business items.
The percentage of income tax one pays is irrelevant. It is a variable based on ones life style / structure. -
Very true that's what I said yesterday your house payment has zero to do with your business
-
When you are comparing IC with a company position it absolutely is relevant. 20% income tax (fairly standard) & 15% FICA turn that $2000 "net" into $1,500. Less $50 for health insurance & $150 for retirement & now you are comparable to a company driver who "nets" $1300. Those are business expenses -- the cost of having an employee (yourself) which the carrier has passed on to you.
You didn't think big carriers would be promoting these programs if it cost them more than just having a company truck, did you?
That's not to say you can't make money or do better than a company driver -- getting excellent mileage like Jar head does just that (as a company driver you get nearly nothing for 9+mpg). I just object to the skewed comparisons of "net income." What matters is how much you've made (& kept) at the end of the year... -
I like this couldn't say it better. Lease drivers see that big 2000$ go into there checking and are like man this great. All I know is every week roughly 33%is taken out for taxes. Company health insurance $100 for single, retirement 10%. If I do more miles I get more lot more moves into new tax bracket. So if I set myself like this ad a lo I wouldn't be much ahead. Now granted I would have the greater freedom n flight flexibility but 100% more agrivation. Sfi seems to bend over backwards for some drivers if they have a incident.

Marginal rate is not the same as effective rate ...

Day 2 down. Not really alot of paperwork, thank god. Safety briefing, then we went into " a day in the life". For me it was a little overwhelming, but that is because for the past 7 years I did loose leaf logs, so all this qual com mumbo jumbo is new and I was getting lost on some of it. As with everything else, it's something new, and have a learning curve. It was frustrating to me because of that and the instructor doesn't give many breaks. One the flip side I do understand they have to do what they gotta do. Just not getting enough time to look the truck over, is frustrating me as well. For day 3, we will be doing driving tests in our own trucks. Then more of "the day in the life." They told us that we can probably take our trucks to the hotel tomorrow night. I still have a positive attitude about making this decision, just don't really care how they shove so much on you in a short period of time.
double yellow and Jar-Head Thank this. -
They used to have it 4 days then load board training day 5 but some college grad decided to condence it to 4 total ... Which makes it a huge cram ..
You'll get through it it frustrates everyone . Dint let it bother you we will get all lined out . You got a good support system here on the board ... -

One should know their personal weekly/monthly expenses to determine if it's worth getting into thst business or to know how much they need to make.
