Interesting in light of the fact that I have spoken with several Werner drivers who have been quite successful going through the PURCHASE program. Again, whitedog, you do not sign a lease for the truck you sign a purchase agreement.
Why my life sux...Ho Dee Hum...

Agree with Whitedog, % 100.
If you have cash, u can go and get the truck from them. But then again, why would you ? Why buy a used truck which is driven by school graduates, and pay the same money that you could pay and buy from an O/O ???
It is lease/purchase with a fancy name.
Simple as is, if u are pissed at the company u are working for and when u quit if u are taking the groundhog bus to go home or another orientation, then u are not an O/OIf u are calling them and telling in which shop u turned in their qualcom, and permits and w/e they gave u and drive your truck to wherever u want to, then you are O/O
If u are paying for the truck, fuel, maint..etc but they still tell you that u can not put the American flag on your truck ? Then you are not O/O -
Doesn't matter what the definition of lease is or purchase is.
There's a high probability at this outfit that you won't last six months anyway.
They know it. You should know it. Why do you think those with bad credit are welcomed into the program alongside those who have spotless credit? All will fall hard in the end. Well, most will, and those aren't good odds. -

we all know I have zero experience here, but from what I'm hearing regarding L/O...
1) it's a bad idea
2) the only way to make it work is:
A ) Buts your butt like nobody's business. Sleep is not an option.
B ) Your FM/dispatcher must be on your side.
If you run team, 2(A) can be dealt with. You have control over that
How are you going to control 2(B )? Especially if the carrier changes FMs on you in mid-stream.
Now, if the carrier would guarantee a certain minimum in-pocket - miles, money, green stamps - whatever, you could work with it. Say, enough to cover truck payment plus 10% (these are methane numbers - and as such, have no relation to the real world). Anything over that could be set aside for future needs.
Sure, it may not be long haul - might be weeks of shorter trips, but it could be done. And without much effort on the part of the carrier, too, it seems.
They already have a load planning system..so it should be already part of the process to get a truck from point A to point B to point C to point D, etc.
Charge the shipper/receiver demurrage. And I mean *CHARGE* them. At present, there's darn little incentive to get trucks in/out of the dock. $100/hour after 2 hours will add up fast if the dock has a habit of being slow. Pass that demurrage - less, say, 10% handling fee - on to the driver. Even 50% would let the driver sleep better.
The carriers are not being adamant enough that every minute that truck sits in a dock, they're actually losing money. It may not mean much for one truck at one dock, but add it up over the course of one year, and that truck could probably haul (more methane numbers) 50 more loads. Multiply that by the number of trucks in the fleet.
Get that truck back on the road and making money for everybody
Proper use of just those two tools could go a long, long way to allowing for my little suggestion to work, I think.
You may now shred my idea. -
You don't own the car until you make the last payment. If you default on the loan, the bank will reposes their car.
And sell it again, --- usually at a loss and you'll be required to make up the difference.
Bye-Bye good credit.
Call it leasing, renting or pay as you go. It's all the same --- collateral.
-
Like I said before, look up the definitions in the dictionary to learn the difference. One big difference is in the tax situation. If leasing, all the lease payment can be written off and there is no depreciation taken. If buying, only the interest can be deducted but the asset can be depreciated. This is a major difference!
-
It all depends on what the definition of "is', is.
-
Fine. Werner calls it a PURCHASE program NOT a lease so that would be the end of this discussion since that is who this thread is talking about!
-
And, as an added bonus --- each poster gets to decide when and where that is.
How cool is that?
