Na if you go to the pilot you can pick up a Uniden 880 for 100 bucks. There on sale right now 50 off the regular price. Looks better than the every day cobra and is just as good if not better, gots weather and an electroc screen face and eliminated cotrols. Looks pretty nice. They usually run you about 150 buck its a good time to pick one up.

Uniden 880 or 980. Best receivers this side of a $1000 ham rig. On Amazon, the 880 is $103 and the 980 is $120. The 980 has sideband, which I find fun to play with when the band is open. At these prices, I'd get the 980.

As for getting it tweaked/peaked/tuned/whatever, this radio doesn't need it. A tech who knows what he's doing (most don't) can squeeze a couple more Watts out of it, but it's not enough to make any difference. If he wants MOAR POWAH!, let him buy an outboard amp. The best sounding rigs I've heard on the air (and I mean clear audio like commercial AM, not the common splatterecho) have been x80s with a good amp.

For what it's worth, my vote is also the Cobra 29. The new one that has the digital face comes with WX automatically. I personally don't see the need to spend the money on the Bluetooth model, but that's just me. I run this radio myself and have had no problems at all with it. Got me opened up and it does about 40 watts. Be sure to get an Astatic noise canceling mic and a Wilson magnet mount antenna. Either a Little Wil or full size antenna is fine. Both are excellent. Good luck and hope the kid likes it!

Ya I went with the 880, I know I'll probably regret that later . But if the OP was going to by his son a gift and really wanted to impress him he should get the 890.

I been strapped for cash otherwise I probably would of got the 990. That's a good price, but then again it was at the pilot and the 890 weren't on sale, and I was able to walk out the store with it with the radio in hand.
    Thanks for the insight info.
