Took me just a few weeks of working for Knight to realize that carrying an extra crank handle in the tractor was a necessity. Of course I also had extra bolts and nuts and the necessary wrenches to do a lot of minor stuff. I just hated to be stuck somewhere. Can't tell you the number of times I'd go to pick up an empty and find that there was no crank handle on the trailer.

OBTW, I never broke my crank off. That would hurt!:biggrin_2551:

He's a union driver -- he'd probably get in trouble for not allowing a union mechanic to waste 2 hours driving out and removing that 1 nut & bolt and replacing the crank handle.

Because the company that I work for pays me by the hour whenever I get stuck somewhere because of a breakdown. That's why I don't carry basic tools. And my company doesn't ask why I don't. If your company doesn't pay you for all of your lost time due to a breakdown, then you should be looking for another company.

    Exactly.

We sometimes pull Wegman's trailers, and they have air motors that operate the landing gear instead of a manual crank handle. If one of those ends up not working as designed, there is a T-handle on the shaft that can be turned manually. I'd hate to have to do that, as it would take a LONG time to get the gear cranked up or down...

So that explains it. Seems that a lot of posters here think that everyone's situation is the same as their own, and are baffled that everyone else doesn't want to do things their way.

I was cranking up a trailer with an old rusted out handle about 6 months ago.It slipped and I had to get 10 stitches in my middle finger. It was fun showing my bosses my booboo.
