Most of the hydraulics I have seen on crude trailers have the two lines running from the truck to the trailer and you flip a switch in the cab to turn the pump on. Then the hydraulic pump mounted on the trailer is controlled with a reversible lever mounted on the trailer. I'm assuming this, but I believe that going from load to unload is just a matter of reversing the trailer mounted pump via the control lever?

Maybe the trailer mounted pumps run different. I use truck mounted pumps.

Haha, I think I say that almost every day, Dustin! The man who can admit he doesn't know everything has an infinite capacity to learn and grow. I've had recently in my shop a customer with a failed Chelsea 2-way pto (that also wrecked the transmission, but that's another story), driving a shaft-driven product pump (as you described). Another customer just switched from hauling crude to hauling sand, so he wanted to know about converting his 2-way pto to a true wet kit (for end dump or other type work). And sometime later this month, whenever I get some iron moved out of the way, I have a wet kit to install for a heavy hauler and his new Landoll 455.

That is correct. That's how we do it.

I just re read this. I thought you had said the pump direction was controlled by switching the pto. You didn't, that is the exact setup I was describing. A one way pto with 2 lines controlled by a hydraulic lever. Only difference is its trailer mounted.

OK... so... can that pump be ran with a wet kit that was installed to operate a dump trailer? That's the question. I mean it seems that your just pumping fluid, controlling the flow and temp...but...the devil is always in the details.

There is no doubt a reason why there are two different setups. I'm just trying to figure out if one can be modified to serve the other purpose. The reason I'm asking is because I see used trucks with wet kits already on them but they are just wet kits, large reservoir, no cooler. I have no idea of what the flow rates are.

No. They are different speed ptos. Unless they have a 2 speed pto on it

I was going to ask if the speed could be reduced. Or...maybe even a flow control put in the line to reduce the flow rate. I guess that could cause a back pressure problem?

Anyway...thanks for the input. Just trying to get my head around it.

My PTOs are specked at 25 gpm and 3000psi for hydraulic drive trailers.

I have been told that plains trucks have pump direction controlled in side the cab. Our trucks its a valve on the trailer. Forward backwards.
