As I read the post, my heart went out to people that made very bad decisions in their life and even after the person has changed for better things and focused on life that just because what you did in your past is keeping you down. People do all sort of things in life and rise above the situation. In the eye sight of God a small white lie is a sin on the same scale as killing and on the same scale and treating people wrong just because you have authority. Werner is not helping people move forward from this policy. It really is a shame. There has to come a point in the company Mindset that they will think about the people more than themselves. People working for a good business will always give to the company the company needs to give back to its workers. Drug failures will always be grateful for a second chance.

I agree that this rule, if its correct, is wrong. Everyone has something in their past that they could have done differently. If they made a mistake like this one and suffered the consequence and learned from it, then they should be allowed to prove themselves given a second chance. The OP was honest and ready to prove it was all in the past. I did a lot of stupid things in my youth too. How can someone like this truly become a productive member of society when he is denied a job that is done by some whom are ex-cons? My $0.02

I have not read the entire thread in detail, mainly because by and large, the posts, especially jimmybones' post, are 3 years old. I'm in school now at Sheridan Technical College in Pembroke Pines FL. Quick background about the quality of my school, ALL persons who are qualified as CDL examiners in the state of Florida, have been certified by the instructors at Sheridan.
Along with Roehl, Schneider, and Knight, I am considering Werner for my first job after school. We graduate December 18, 2014.
Having done two "long" road trips thus far, my most vivid observation was that we saw more Werner trucks on the road than any trucks from any other carrier.
I wonder who would want to hazard a guess as to why that is. Your objective feedback on the other three companies I'm considering will also be appreciated.
Thanks!!! -
Happy Thanksgiving to all people that read this post. I'm about to begin orientation with Werner on 3 December. I'm very excited about my new career after my 21 year career in the Army. Swift is the largest trucking in the industry. I read on Werner home page that they are the 5th largest trucking company. My instructors said to the class: stay with a company for at least a year. I have mentor that was a trucker and he gives me plenty of advice. He really let's me know what to expect on the road with my trainer. Also I watch Utube videos of Werner training, a guy name (sinister) gives very good advice. I'm ready to hit the road. I'm new but I always watch my post. Take care and be safe on the road.

I'm scheduled to start orientation on 12/29 in Lakeland. How's it been going for you? -
Wow, this thread took off long after I started it.
I'm still at Prime Inc, I recommend them highly over Werner. Not perfect, but they treat us right. -
yeah, companies will put you as the driver in some "fun" positions sometimes regarding mechanical issues. You're either a negligent driver or a whiney driver if anybody asks and it's hard to impossible to strike a middle ground there. Hey, it ain't them that has to sit there on the side of the road for hours making no money that day if the truck or trailer goes cow on you, so what do they care. You gotta be a little sneaky sometimes and let the shops do your talking for you. You know the truck needs fixed and so does the dude behind the counter at TA, but they want to hear it from somebody else that the truck needs a new this or that. They should trust the drivers since they see and use the equipment every day but in reality they don't, especially at the starter/big fleets who deal primarily with rookies and idiots.

Old post/thread, but I'll throw my two cents out there. 10:1 odds it was his other than honorable separation that was the issue and not the 10+ year old failed drug test. Getting booted from the military because of drug use is a bit different than a kid working at Wal-Mart getting popped. But hey...I guess getting removed from training because you disclosed "I got booted out of the Navy with a general or dishonorable discharge due to a failed drug test" could be summarized as "I got removed from training because of a failed drug test."

That's ridiculous that anything that happened 10 years ago would cost you a job with a crappy company like Wiener. What it tells me is that they're probably overbooked on drivers and need to rachet up the BS so they can cut the flow of newbies. Once they get into a pinch for drivers suddenly word comes down from the brass that everybody short of convicted felons is good to go. I'm fairly certain that's how the recruiting game is played at all the "big fleet, inc" companies. They relax and tighten their standards based on how many trucks are sitting in the yards without drivers, not so much because of any principle or high minded standards.
