He should be past SLC by Thursday. The storm he needs to watch is clobbering Seattle and Portland right now.
-
after this thread? Don't count on it!!!

Surprised your company sent a truck out there this time of year without chains. That being said go ahead and get them in Sac, no reason to get turned back.
-
suggest you call your dispatch,,notify themof the upcoming conditions and your concerns,,,get them to reroute your load and get paid for the extra miles,,or get them to buy chains and have a learning experience,, big difference between a driver and a trucker,, might become a trucker or advance on the way towards one,,snow and chains in the rockies is not all that bad..after all Lisa on Ice Roads does it.

With no western mountain experience, and no snow or chain experience, I'm thinking this might be one of those "this might not be the load for me" situations... I'm really a southeast driver so far, and like I said, that only for the last couple months... We'll see what they say..
-
My advice is this. ...pay close attention to the weather forecast that's very important...also it's up to you the driver to make the decision as to whether or not you drive in those conditions not your dispatcher. ..if you're able to get out of Sacramento by Wednesday am and weather still looks good I would get up and over Donner as quickly as possible and keep the left door shut to get as far ahead of the storm as you can...but also tell your company you need tire chains regardless because California I'm almost certain will be checking Wednesday at Applegate...they have no choice but to buy chains in Sacramento for you..as always be safe because no load is worth more than your's or anyone else's life..

legally you have to have chains, as far as turning down the run, if you can get over donner before the next storm you might be alright, I just came over I-80 from Cheyenne, WY to Sacramento..dry the whole way (my first time!!)...don't know about the storm otter is mentioning. Just watch the weather like a hawk, I was checking each states road conditions websites as I went. Outside of Donner Pass its a lot less work than going up and over on I-70.
-
I-80 over Donner is supposed to get an ungodly amount of snow within the next few days. They are saying up to 2ft or more of snow, and high winds.
California will turn you around or shut you down if you don't have chains. They do check, typically at Applegate exit. You need to have a minimum of 6 chains.
This storm has the makings to where they will just shut down the road for a couple days until the storm moves on.12String Thanks this. -
They won't start the "chain checks" until the storm is actually "on the mountain". Like I said...his real issue is probably Parleys Canyon and that always blowing Elk Mountain to Sherman zone!joseph1135 and ramblingman Thank this.
