I have never had to run 8. Just 6 that's why I'm questioning whether I have the 4th bag in the truck. I'd hate to get to Donner and be "one of those guys" that gets turned around because I'm short a bag of chains that is sitting in my garage!
I80 from west coast this time of year?

They want you to have 8, that's "maximum chains". I've never used 8. The two in the bag are more for in case one breaks
-
they don't have the "max" category any longer. About 2009 they started allowing "modified max"...4 outside drives with the 2 drag chains on trailer. If the roads are bad enough to require those 2 extra inside chains...they shut it down....not the reason, but still the outcome!

Aahhh, the joys of West Coast driving ! A couple things to keep in mind. Donner does get shut down in heavy snows, even as long as 2 days. Can you afford to sit VS. going south (I-40) Also, Flagstaff gets hairy sometimes, even Albuquerque. Even getting past Reno, you still have mountains in Nv./Ut./Wy. (the I-15/I-84 from S.L.C. excellent suggestion). Have plenty of fuel and spaghettis in case you have to sit. Hey, and it's still fall too ! Winter doesn't arrive until 12/21.

What Moonbeam said! I'd usually go that way if it was going to be traffic time in SLC, too.
Fixed that right up, Otter!

watch out for "wanna do me a favor?"

Also, if you are going to be snowed in Reno a couple of days you might want to wire yourself some money over to the 49'er so you will have lunch money when you get to the other side!!Cranky Yankee Thanks this.

You are only required to have chains in your possesion in Colorado going over the big hill. That is on I70 between mile markers 133 and 259. The rest of the state you can get a big fine if you needed them, didn't have them on and cause any problems such as an accident or blocking a highway.

Yeah, that's right next to the strange dish with the moving parts in the buffet labeled, "Load Planner's Special".

Thanks for all the advice everyone, definitely appreciated. In the end they moved the load to someone with chains on hand, and I'm running from CA (LA) over to WI, but via I40 then up through KS, IA. Misses all the mountains. I do want to experience it all, but I'll save that heavy stuff for later if possible. Maybe summer
Weather should be good, then they'll run me back to the southeast from there next week for home time. (I hope)
