Hello dear colleagues.
New on this forum, so probably my question was disscused here so many times but don t know where else to ask. Looking to relocate from ontario to alberta in the oilfield trucking industry, of course because of good pay rumours. I have 11 yrs experience short/longhaul, but zero oilfield experience and a really good job here in toronto that brings me around 60-70k a year. Some stories that i have heard were talking 100k and up a year. And that is what i am aiming. Can anybody point me out in this direction? I don t mind doing hard work and working 70-80 hrs weekly and living in a camp the middle of the forest. The tougher the better, if the money is right. Any recomandations or ideeas will be highly appreciated.
Thx guys

Welcome to the forum Alex. You are the proud beginner of page 421 of this thread. Pour a drink (coffee - rum - warm milk - whatever ....) and start at page 1 ! Over the course of your journey, you will find most of your questions have been answered, as you have guessed. I'm not being a smart #####, just giving you a boost. IE - Prairie Boy occasionally posts lists of company's that are hiring, including his. Good Luck. BTW - If you decide to have that drink, make it a coffee/rum/milk combo !!!

Considering the price of oil and no sign of recovery yet I wouldn't be in any hurry to quit your job and head west anytime soon. My advice would be to wait til January or even may

I have to agree with Nitrogen at this time, the patch is slowing down somewhat due to the price of crude oil.
wizbang Thanks this. -
^^^^ I'm not saying don't come, more like don't burn your bridges. The first quarter of 2015 will set the tone of things for a while

Hello there everyone,
Im new to this forum, just signed up. Im interested in trcuk driving as a new career! Im avery hard worker, been doing heavy construction for three years now kinda guy who puts 12hr 6-7 a week! Im thinking to relocate to Ablerta. Do u guys recommend me to in-roll in driving school in Alberta so I can be around and kinda easier to get my foot in the oilfield work? Or it does not matter if I go to school in Toronto then start looking for work! If u guys recommend to school in Alberta can u please recommend good school? Tuition fees are not a problem at all...,
Thanks -
I don't recommend enrolling in driving school anywhere. See also Prairie Boy's comment above. Second quarter of 2015 will see changes in oil patch. Some activity is being cancelled now but the delayed effect of capital markets will hit full-force in Alberta in about four months. People will be going home. Business as usual in poorly-governed boom-bust Alberta oil patch.
Alberta Provincial truck drivers can only dream of such leisurely hours of service. Alberta drivers who do not cross Provincial boundaries can be forced to work 15 hours per day (really 17 hours per day) 7 days a week, ad infinitum. -
You'd be very lucky to make $100k as a rookie. Most of the leading companies you might make $60-80k.
$100k would be exceptional for first year.
OTR experience is helpful but many green guys/wannabes fail to understand the diverse skills needed in many oilfield jobs (well servicing, picker, winch truck, heavy haul, TDG, off road/mountain driving etc). Plus, everyone thinks they can hack it, but remote locations, away from home, weather, hassles, spring break up, all take their toll. Many guys quit after their first winter or even before that (days/weeks).
In 2-3 years you might make $130k, so how does that $75k look now? -
Just to give you some insight.
Good info in Today's Trucking.
Read the Letters on Page 7.
No doubt carriers will never get it.

I don't know how you get paid in Ontario, but here in Qc, to get 60-70k gross a year...good luck, you need to drive at least 5000 km a week, 52 week a years...
