Been rent free for 2+ years already.
Give it about another year or so on the road and I'll be buying... -
How often do you plan on going home?Companies give drivers I think 1 day off for every week so if you go home once a month is 4 days home worth paying rent?I would stay at your dads during hometime ,save money when ya can then in a yr or so if your ready to go local, rent yourself an apartment.

Stay with Dad if you two get along. If not, rent a small apt or studio. You won't be there a lot, but you'll have a place to go if things go south at the company you're with. Some companies are merciless if they think you have no place to go. Remember, it's the company's truck. You can't joyride in it, (most companies) if you get mad, you can't divert off route to go home; and you maybe charged with vehicluler embezzlement. ( Unauthuorized use of a vehicle you have permission to drive, but only for the purpose that you were hired to drive for; point A to point B, not to point H. ) No company is worth going to jail for, or becoming homeless in a place like Possum Trap, Miss. I'm single with no close family, but I made sure to have an option outside of my employer. Good luck with your new career, good, bad, or otherwise, it will be an adventure.

When I was OTR, I used my sisters house as an address for my CDL. If you're single and don't have any kids like I was, don't bother getting your own place. Live in the truck and save every penny you make.
Its gonna suck for a while, but when I quit OTR, I bought my own 4 bedroom house and paid it off with cash. I also bought 2 used cars. Not too many 33 year olds without a college degree are in my position. It was well worth the struggle.fieldchaser, Chinatown and browndawg Thank this. -
And it isn't an old home either. It's in Carmel, which is one of the classier suburbs in Indianapolis. The home listed for $220,000, but I paid $170,000 for it. It's easy to talk realtors down in price when you're speaking Benjamin's. It's HOA, and in a good school district.
Shortly after i bought the home I got married to a single mom. I now drive for the post office, so I have a good paying 9-5er. I have a really good retirement to look forward too.
The industry can be very rewarding, but at first you have to make sacrifices when you start out.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Several drivers posted they lived in the truck, then bought nice homes later. One bought an apartment building that consists of 4 apartments; rents 3 out and keeps one for himself. He will have a good future in retirement.
