I will agree with you that if you have a fresh head with tight sealing valve job that the increased compression can cause the compression ring on the piston to wear now.
So everyone says just run it.
So the next question is when do you guys decide to rebuild it than?
To me pulling a old head off and installing a new one is not a big job and if you had to do it a 2nd time when you saved up the cash for doing liners and pistons it wouldn't be the death of me.
As far as the oil pump when do you determine it is to the point of needing replacement also?
Budget partial refresh on a 60 series Detroit.

Two words: oil samples.
baha Thanks this. -
If it runs good and has good oil pressure and don't use oil, I would run it, miles don't mean anything, just keep it serviced regular, that's what I would do.

By the second time you may be in the same trap of the bottom being stronger than the top. Last Detroit I did I want to say the complete kit was around 2 grand and reman head was 2500. If she runs good just save it up do it all together you will be happier with it in the end. Don't get me wrong I have even backed in a corner and done some patches that turned out real good a few were however grief and misery.

So how often do you hear of a catastrophic failure on a 60 series and what was the part that caused it?

Bull gear has killed it's fair share of engines.
-
I have heard that. What happens and how big of a job is that to replace before it fails?
-
I will tell you what is almost laughable to me is how frickin cheap these parts are compared to repaireing my Yanmar marine diesel in my old commercial boat.
i just a found a OEM turbo for the 60s series for 600 bucks . I paid 3200 for mine on my Yanmar and that was 8 years ago.
Have not looked at what they want for a injection pump yet but that was 3800 on my Yanmar also. -
Don't know about failure, but Detroit recommends change at a million I believe.

What he said miles dont mean anything but just have it inframed every million miles and make sure you change oil regularly and i dont know when you suppose to change bullgear the gaskets or anything
