I will second that there are a lot more job opportunities for drivers than there are for most college graduates. Once a college graduate picks a particular track, they're stuck unless they manage to "reinvent" themselves and transition to something else. You'll often need to go back to school (shell out more money) to accomplish that though.
While there are a LOT more opportunities for drivers with good MVR...the flip side of it is that you'll likely be working 60+ hours a week to make less than or equal to what a mid-career college graduate is going to make for 40 hours of work. Extrapolate that out over 52 weeks. As a driver...you're going to put in approximately 1,040 hours more to make what that white collar (as an example) person makes. As a driver, you'll put in those extra 1,040 hours each year while enjoying zero paid vacation days (for the first year or two), a crappy 401k vesting period (many trucking companies don't have you fully vested until 3+ years in), etc.
I'm not hating. I'm just putting it in perspective. I'm in the process of transitioning from a white collar career track to a driving position. I voluntarily walked away from a good salary, paid vacation, 40 hour work week, etc. because I wanted to give truck driving a shot. Time will tell whether or not that was a bright decision. However, I will say that I did a LOT of research and made an informed decision.bigred81 Thanks this. -
True. My wife works three 12 hour days a week, and made 72K last year. Pretty good for having four days off a week at home and a 36 hour work week. But not everybody can handle being an RN. And she can't stand being in a car for long periods of time if we go on a road trip, she gets antsy and has to get out often, so she couldn't handle being a truck driver either. Some guys like working 70+ hours a week and being at their place of employment 24/7 like an otr driver and would go bonkers having 4 days off at home every single week lol.bubbagumpshrimp Thanks this.
