I dont have good news to share. It did not go well. He is going to do it again.. it was the same two examiners . He is determined and positive. I am trying to be positive. He passed all his tests the first time.. and now its just this hurdle. Am positive it will come... when I hear good news.. this forum will be the first place I will share it.

It has been a true test for our ability to keep chugging along. But will make it is what he says.. It has been his dream to drive a truck. and now he is 54. He just wants to do it and says this is a test for his determination and ability to go forth positively.

I dont feel good at at times.. but most of the time I am positive.

I will come back here soon. Thank you so much for all your support and suggestions..

Right. Besides he will still take road tests to get a job at a truck company and they don't give you multiple chances!

Sometimes the examiners are just punks. I would try to take the test out of a different office.

Well, i slightly disagree with your statement, and here's why. When a newbie tries for a job, the company already knows he has no experience. All the newbie has to really do is try and try his best. The guy giving the company road test has probably been there himself, and knows full well the nervousness of a newbie.
Heck, true story, back when i had 15 years of experience, a guy had to give me a road test, for the job I applied for. Ok, so here he WAS, only a 6 month driver and giving ME a road test?

He took ONE look at me, saw my gray thinning hair line, actually my bald spot, saw how I already "knew" what I was about to do, and said to me, " Ok, take a right out of here. The go to the strip mall at the next red light. Then pull in. Then get out. I need to buy YOU a coffee and talk with you.

SO I complied, as he was giving me my road test. I respected his mission that he was given, but then, I respect all. He bought me that coffee, he asked me so many questions, I thought he was an under-cover reporter.

Then he said, "let's go". I said, "Where to now"? He said, "back to the terminal, no way, no how in hell was he going to not pass me, and that I should have never been tested by a newbie".

He was a great "kid". Not because he passed me, but because HE respected me and my abilities.
Don''t know whatever became of him, we lost touch after I moved on years later. But he was accident and ticket free all the years I worked there.

Maybe one does the yard tests, and the other does the road?

When I was in school, we where all ####y that we'd all pass on the first try, only one of us did, most of us on our 3rd tries. As the instructors said, you can be as good as anyone at all of it, but it's different when you're sitting there with a guy with a gun and your future employment on the line. The thing is I think the older you get the weirder it is to take a test. When I took it at 32 I hadn't been tested for anything in a decade and a half, it was just a foreign experience. Coming from the point of view of running an under-cdl trucking company for 8 years as the owner it was just the strangest thing to have to pass a test in front of some police officer. I think my first two fails where at least half getting used to it. I can't imagine what it would be like if I was 54. My recollection is that the younger people in the class tended to pass with fewer tests, and the older you got the longer it took. I guess I learned as much about myself as I did about truck driving from the experience.

BTDT. Twice. In Wpg, no less. :yes2557: First, tho, I should not be replying in an "experienced trucker" forum because am not an experienced trucker. Maybe in a few hundred thousand miles or so, but not yet, if ever.

That said, I have direct knowledge of failing the road test at least four times, maybe five. Once was because of waiting too long for oncoming traffic to go by before pulling out from a stop sign. Once was because of "examiner assist to driver" because of asking the examiner in the right seat if the road to the right at the intersection was clear of oncoming traffic before pulling out from the stop sign. The driver's view was partially blocked both by a large snowbank and by the examiner in the right seat.

Have had the two examiners in the cab situation, too. One was an examiner candidate and one was an experienced examiner. I am of the opinion that the candidate examiner was "making his bones" by failing the driver for a questionable reason. Never again will I voluntarily consent to placing myself in that kind of situation. That was a third failure, don't remember the reason for the fourth.

Anyway, perseverance paid for us, at least as far as getting the license was concerned, and it will for the both of you, too.
