Are you talking van rates? I pull a flatbed and don't see any change in rates. I'm in Ohio right now and heading home to NH tomorrow for $4.00 a mile but that's normal. Nothing comes out of NH and when I'm ready to head back out I usually dead head 300 to 600 miles.

Yes, van rates. At night I would get luck and get my driver close to $5/mile and none of this was the east cost. The closest we have ever been to the east was Ohio/west Virginia border. I am going nuts.

NCBroker You got to post 2 more times so I can send you something. you only have 5 got to have 7.

No I do understand, they deadhead ships half way around the globe whereas a trucker can hardly d/h 100 miles.

I deadhead hundreds of miles all the time. Of course I run my business like a business. I don't haul low prices freight into hard to get out of areas. I just bounced out of Ft Lauderdale 220 miles home yesterday. Maybe you have a poor business model? Maybe you have unrealistic expectations? Maybe you don't have any good freight? However, to blame your perception about deadhead on the oil companies is stupid.
What do ships have to do with anything. Are you talking about oil tankers? If so they are no different than most truck tankers who have 50% deadhead. Container ships haul containers both ways as do RORO ships. -
Sounds Like it wont move for $2 or less either buwhahahhaSkate-Board Thanks this.

Illegals messing up rates?
I have $1000 says there are more white rednecks running a load for under $1.60 mi right now then what immigrant drivers are rolling down the road for right now.
I have been to places and talked with Mercer, CRST Malone, Landstar O/O's, the subject came up about what rate they they were getting. Firestone,.. Styrofoam insulation sheets,.. going from SLC to Denver. My carrier got me $1500 for roughly 504mi. Mercer and Malone driver were doing exact same run to exact same place for $1300. My carrier owner is Lithuanian and based out of Chicago BTW. I almost never roll for under $2.25mi. But yes,.. I have moved empty containers and such for $1.60 - $1.80 in order to get at a much better load already lined up somewhere else.
So its not a matter of blaming immigrants for low rates,.. when regular every day O/O's like myself will do it with a smile and never blame anyone but myself for trying to survive out here.
Know your lanes, know your rates will go up and down at different times of the year.
Texas and pretty much anywhere south of I40 this time of the year will be flooded with trucks. i80 coast to coast is paying good right now. Well for flat bed it is.

Yup!!! I got my ideal rate to come out West plus $1,100 more on a 1,300 mile run. So here I sit getting ready to dead head out 600 miles after spending the day looking at crap loads. One was one pick with 11 drops and it was tarped! Some company driver is going to be forced to take that load.
