looking at a few different trucks, most come with 3406b's and the rest with e's I know they are good engines but I'm just curious about the problems I should be expecting, yes I know the E has electrical issue but as with all electrical engines. Being mechanically inclined with these engines is a given as is a must when your an O/O. I am just looking for something's I need to keep my eye on, something's I can do to keep everything work the way they are supposed to, and anything else I should expect would be heplful

E model heads are fairly heat sensitive. I ve had good luck with mine, and have alway kept it under 212. It is a tired 550 but working my fan switch in the summer has always done the trick even pulling 110k hay trains up here in montana. The couple times I've popped my alarm off was when I was too late in giving the fan a head start on a three mile hill.

The B's are older engines late 80's cut off on building them. Then they went to the mechanical C till 94 or 95. There was also an electric C called the PEEC. PEECS scare people to death and most convert them to manual but a few are still around. The thing about a B and mechanical C is there are getting fewer of us dinosaurs around that can work on them. They can be like a Rolex very fine when they are right, but worthless if not set right

So the e's are the one sensitive to heat. I read on another post about cracking heads on one of the motors. I read that these motors need someone who knows as my neighbor who pulls hopper with his ford l9000 tells me. I also read something about the water pumps breaking constantly.

E is sensitive to heat but as far as water pump trouble I am not aware of any. I mean I have put some on about 100k and some on about 900k. Prob average life is 300k so not bad for a cheap easy repair

Don't know if they're more sensitive,or drivers not paying attention,or don't care,or know any better. Both are good motors, the b model you need to leave stock, unless you know how to set the timing and pump. A properly tuned b model will get high 5 to mid 6 mpg grossing 80k If you drive it right.
