As an employee?

yes
a driver ,,, -
I would say whatever would be equal or close to .40 cpm plus some basic benefits. Add-on what you would pay as in worker's comp, matching social security, etc.
-
Most Companies are paying around 25% to a driver..
Which bears more questions, Is that a TRUE 25% of 100%..Most likely NO.
A Good Carrier that pays percentage will give 28-30% of 100% Billed linehaul to their drivers
You Got to watch..Because these irregular route carriers (both big and small) like to cut corners with your pay on a percentage ."semi" retired Thanks this. -
I would start them at 25% of the linehaul and move them up to 30% once they proved themselves and were released from probationary status.

if your going on a cpm basis. depends on your location of the country.
a lot of you say 40 cents. but around these parts. the average is 35 cents. and go nowhere near 40. -
Keeping in mind, the OP asked what a fair % rate is, not mileage (cents per mile). As others have stated, usually in the 25-30 % range. 30% being kind of rare. But like stayinback says, be careful. % is one of the easiest ways to rip off a driver. I worked for a dump outfit for a couple of years, who claimed to pay me 27% of the trucking charge. The boss had me pick up a check for the trucking charge on a certain load, when I got my paycheck, I noticed it was more like 22%. When I questioned the boss, he got all flustered, and couldn't give me a straight answer. I quit the next week.

My driver gets 50 percent after the cost of fuel. Which comes out to around 36 percent of the total billed. He is in the middle of a two week tour and he will have around 4250 miles once he is done and be paid 3400.

Hi joem, well, I have to tell you, you are one of the good ones. I've worked for some real shyster's,( not for long) who were all sunshine and smiles when they hired you, but a few paychecks in, I was working for $2.00/hr. Obviously you know what it takes to keep a driver. It's good to hear that, once in a while.
