New Authority

    Reading the other post regarding new authority, I have a few questions myself but I didnt want to hijack his thread, so I here is mine.

    I'm currently leased on and very happy with my current arrangement. Money is good and the runs are steady.

    How ever,.. like everything else,.. eventually I will need to put my big boy pants on and run my own show. I have plans to buy more trucks and hire more drivers. My goal is to get out of the truck.

    The other thread regarding new authority, he asked how you guys went about getting loads when some brokers require X amount of time before they will contract with a new company.

    My idea is to buy a 2nd crap truck, running or not. Register it and put my authority/insurance etc on it to get my authority started. Then just park the truck and not use it. That way in 1 - 2 yrs when I am ready to cut out on my own, my authority will show some age on it. I would like to try to book a few loads for my current truck in between just to get a feel for it. My current company will allow this. I have discussed the idea with him and he is ok with it.

    Is that a dumb idea,.. to waste all that money on the insurance when I'm not really needing/using it? Or does it sound plausible and make it easier for when I do break out 100% on my own?
    Should I wait and just pack as much money away as I can? What would you guys recommend?

    My other question is regarding taxes. Will I save money by paying myself a personal salary. Currently I do not. I just have a sole proprietorship set with a DBA. I want to incorporate myself next month when I come back in and get my company name and get my DOT# started as well. This is all new for me. My wife is looking into it. But her family was in the restaurant business. That and Obama closed so many tax breaks regarding establishing a new business.

    These are all good questions.........Any question regarding starting youre own business is good.

    A good CPA will direct you on where to put your profits........My Money works for me, I put 5% weekly in an IRA through my Bank......

    Make sure you have MONEY working for YOU...Otherwise, After Time, Your going to Feel like your working for Nothing. Even though you technically are making profit..(Kinda hard to explain, But i think you may get it)........

    Set yourself up for Success........Put as much away Weekly as you can in an interest bearing IRA....Or High intersest paying account,

    As for equipment........There are so many variables on what to do, Old,New this and that...go with your Gut.

    Obtaining quality customers.......THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PROJECT OF BEING A PROFITABLE CARRIER.

    Get your GOOD Customers and dont LOSE them to anyone!! Service still matters to most......Cusatomers do Shop Price, But when you can service their needs,consistently, They wont even Bat an Eye with anyone else.

    Dont be a 'Hillbilly or Supertrucker" Operate your business as a Professional at all times....100% of the Time (Look Presentable.Talk professionally to everyone you encounter)

    This is a very tough Business...But you can be a success!!

    You can do like I am doing, I have my own authority and I contract freight services from Artur Express. For 17% of the load, they provide the trailers, the insurance on the trailer and the cargo insurance. They provide the loads so you don't have to chase them on your own and you get a dedicated dispatcher to work with. There are plenty of freight forwarders and logistics companies that don't have their own trucks that will contract with you in similar arrangements. It allows you to age your authority and build business references while still making a steady income.

    I agree,.. I will at some point need the assistance of a tax attorney/CPA.

    I'm strictly small time right now. I'm in an 05 Columbia, its paid for. My only expenses are fuel, bobtail insurance and trailer rental. Plus what ever maintenance/repairs come up. I give up 15% of the gross. Truck has been as reliable as an old dog for the last 6 months. Trailer will need a couple tires soon. I just bought new Michelin steers for my tractor. I should get another 1 - 2 yrs out of the drives. I'm netting anywhere from $2500 - $4000 weekly. The main factor being fuel. I'm less than 2 months into this. So far so good. I'm trying to put money away for a new trailer at the moment. That will be my next big purchase.


    I have no delusions of grandeur. I dont want more trucks then I can mentally and financially handle. I just want enough trucks with a few good well paid drivers who have the same attitude that I have. I am honestly burnt out being on the road. I do it because I see this as my ticket to financial freedom and future retirement.

    I was just just wondering how some of you guys are doing it. What tax breaks have you guys figured out. What avenues should I pursue to remain liquid. I have a good idea how I want to go about it. But I am not beyond learning from guys who were where I am now.

    I was a small employer in a niche market of Hauling Mobile Homes. Was running as many as 6 trucks. 12 employees. When I first expanded from myself with another driver, I put myself on salary payroll. This gave me the option to be covered by workmens compensation insurance. Now that I have shrunk back to just myself, I don't have work comp anymore and I use my LLC to operate, instead of my stock corporation. There is advantages to both or all three options. Single entity of self-employed (not incorporated), LLC and stock Corporation. I have no steady customers, now. I use the load boards to get work and I focus on Oversize. Best pay for the mileage. I run a 48 step.
    I think the expense of having the insurance to keep your authority active is a waste of money. You can get work with your experience, explain to broker your personal driving experience. Some brokers will not hire but there is plenty work out here to keep busy.
    Maybe you could find someone to run under your authority for the year or two with a local run and give them a break on the insurance cost. Maybe a local O/O set up with a local run with no broker involved.

    In my opinion, a new DOT number does not matter. Yeah a few brokers will not work with you but so what? There is enough business out there that you will find loads with no problems. Take that money you would have paid in insurance and put that into an emergency fund account.

    As for the business and your salary, if you are going to want the protection of the LLC or Corporation you will need to pay yourself a salary. You hear all the time the term piercing the corporate veil. Well that means to break through the personal asset protection afforded you by the LLC or Corporation. The biggest thing that you need to do is NOT intermix the business and personal money. NEVER, EVER pay a personal expense with company funds, not even for a pack of cigarettes or a taco. If it is not a business expense, never use business funds.

    A corporation or LLC is a (according to the law) living, breathing entity and separate from you. Once you spend company money on yourself (short on grocery money one week) you are now one with your Corporation or LLC and the lawyers will come after your personal assets.

    One of the Rich Dad series of books explains this all really well. It is called "Own Your Own Corporation" and is written by a lawyer. It is pretty well written laymans terms that most can understand. It also explains how to protect your equipment by having that in another corporation.

    I didnt want to come out in the open with this just yet, but I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

    Hiring my new driver next month. Will team with him for a month or two until I am satisfied he can handle things solo.

    Hopefully I find a second truck before summer.

    But I have applied for my own authority. I have set up my LLC here in Fla. Banking, DOT# MC# are all done. I'm supposed to call FMCSA Monday for their registration process,.. drug testing, how many trucks,.. pre safety audit sort of thing I guess. This is all new for me.

    This way I can be more in control and get more comfortable setting up my own loads. Still staying leased on with my current carrier for now. But things are going really well for me.

    Carrier I am with now does that.

    He owns a main carrier that all the trucks and equipment are leased to, then the secondary carrier that all the dispatching is done through.
