what your saying, is that laptops, tablets and cell phones are not allowed. cuz they don't have ecm imput. that would also say that paper is also not allowed.

this part of the revised regulation simply requires us to display our logs provided we can digitally sign.

:::The revision of the guidance clarifies the relationship between the Agency's policy concerning the use of logging software programs and the Agency's January 4, 2011, regulatory guidance concerning electronic signatures by removing the requirement that drivers print and sign paper copies of RODS generated through such logging software, provided the driver is able to sign the RODS electronically at the end of each work day and display the electronic record at the roadside. :::

the rules were set in july 2011 or something to that date. and changed in july 2014. note the wording at the end of your link statement.

:::All prior Agency interpretations and regulatory guidance, including memoranda and letters, are rescinded to the extent they are inconsistent with this guidance.DATES: This regulatory guidance is effective July 10, 2014.:::

this information you provided only talks about logging software. it mentions nothing about eobrs or having to be tied into ecms yet.
there is no regulation over eobrs and ecms yet. OR, if there is, it more then likely only pertains to companies already using them.

all i'm seeing in that information you provided, is that we only have to show logs with digital signatures. in regards to RODS (records of duty status).

i'm NOT seeing anything in that information you provided that has anything to do witih eobrs and ecms.

i haven't turned in the inspection sheet yet, i'll have to look up the code violations. when i deliver my load this morning.

yeah, I got that too, I print mine each day still, use my 3 in one hp to trippak scan to company, keep extra ink cartridges. have them backed up on laptop and online backup in a cloud somewhere.

    I take no chances.

it would seem they would come up with something, but it seems it would be an addon . jj kellers site says they have a solution for all vehicles types, but that refers to vehicle size from pickups to class 8. they all use a data port.

the system I have to go to by august 2015 is a jj keller unit, fairly inexpensive, plugs into dat port and use Bluetooth to sned the info to a smartphone or tablet.

Let me try and answer some of your questions. Lets get back to the regulations, and the current changes and interpretations thereof.

The interpretation from FMCSA in July 2014 say this:

As has been said previously, ECM connection required, etc. Laptop, tablet, cell phone and GPS based systems do not qualify as AOBRD.

Now, having said that, those other systems ARE allowed if they meet all the requirements of 395.8, graph grid, etc.

Whether or not an electronic signature is used, the "driver" must be able to print the current and prior days RODS.

The "driver" must PRINT, not fax, not email. That is, with the driver's printer, not the DOT inspector's. You do not get 48 hours to do so, it must be upon request. The printouts must conform with the requirements of 395.8, so they need to have all the required information that paper logs did.

If the driver cannot print the RODS, or those printouts do not contain the required information, there may be violations.

NON-AOBRD tablets, laptops and phone systems are just electronic versions of paper logs. They are nice, pretty, neat, handy, etc. But they must still be printed, or be capable of being printed upon request, despite what the software company that sells them tells you.

Hope this helps clear things up a bit.

not what I said at all, they are the same as paper logs and have to be printed when asked , they don't qualify as eld eobr, or aobr.

scalemaster explained it all to you fully. hope you understand him

395.15 Has to do with AOBR's, hooked to the motor via ecm, etc. There is no requirement to print upon demand with these devices. As long as the required elements of 395.15 can be displayed on an electronic display, you are good.

If what you had was not an AOBR, and you do not use electronic signatures, then you could be in violation if you did not already have your previous days printed out and signed. That would not be a violation of 395.15, though.

    snowwy Thanks this.
