Why did you quit a good paying line haul job to take a step backwards by leasing a truck? Personally I would have stayed at the line haul gig. If I'm going to lease a truck, I want double what you're making, or don't waste my time.

Yea, I know LTL pays well because I did it, but I drive my truck to my house every night and I live in a rural area. Containers or logs are the best bet for me right now. Not to mention you said 9 hour work days...fedex, ups, etc can't pay me what I'm making with 9 hour work days...I leave out around 2 every morning and get home between 2 and 4...sometimes earlier. Most of my runs now are around 680 - 700 miles.

I didn't lease a truck. I paid cash...all of $16,000 for an 07 Volvo with ISX lol. I've made a lot off of that investments so far. If it was blown up today I'd be more than satisfied with my return on investment. I started driving line haul in ATL, then my wife and I drove together for the same LTL carrier, we decided to have a baby and move home. I bought a house in the country ( paid cash), bought my truck, and now I actually come out better than I would have if I stayed on running linehaul by myself. I get to live where I want, and I'm not on call. I like what I do...the hours can be long, but if I wanna take 3 or 4 months off I can lol.
Flybynight041 Thanks this. -
I understand where you're coming from. I was making great money doing heavy haul. When I quit OTR, I also paid cash for a house, and I bought 3 cars. I jumped on board with the post office. I was on call for the first few years, but was finally able to bid on a run after I gained enough seniority. Now I only work 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. Sometimes I'll crunch a bunch of overtime if I feel like making some extra spending money.

Yea man, I actually had enough seniority at the time I left for a bid run with OD, but I just didn't want to live in ATL, and when you transfer terminals you lose your seniority. So even if I was able to transfer to the Vidalia terminal and run linehaul my seniority would have been lost. Vidalia is mainly city drivers though so I would have had to work the hourly clock...possible dock work ugh. On a 600 mile run after fuel I bring in between 600 - 700 bucks now depending on the weight so it's working out ok I guess. I miss being on the road, but I'll get back out there one day.

I have worked for the government as an Executive Chef, that job was a lot harder than most....
and $16 a hour? My mother in law just recently got a job holding a road sign for $24 a hour, thats how I know they make too much....she brags she makes great money doing nothing at all.
My mother works for the IRS and sits at a desk all day making more than most....a lot of government jobs are easy, I didnt say all but a lot... -
I don't drive but I've made 90s all 3 yrs with sysco as a selector but I'm slinging on avg 100,000lbs of cases every night hard work but $ is good wouldn't mind driving someday won't be young forever lol

The team trucks are the big money LTL jobs. I was going to mention that but was primarily talking about solo line drivers. What was your rate to the truck with OD if you don't mind me asking?
-
Jobs that crappy make drivers seem like they're a privileged bunch don't they? Everything is relative I guess.
-
Top pay at OD for teams is 68 cpm. Another good team LTL job is R&L Carriers.
slim shady Thanks this.
