Well since I left Conway I've been trying to purge the driving from my system, hence my lack of posts here for the most part.
Just graduated from college with a B.S in Mathematics/Statistics.
Starting in spring with a dual Masters in Accounting/Finance. Also trying to scrounge up money to finish getting my Private Pilots License.
Looking at joining the Air National Guard here or the Army Reserve as a Warrant Officer, hopefully flying Apaches.
Landed a local 50-ish mile shuttle gig, moving paint from the plant to the DC..Pays nearly 21/hr on just weekends. No benefits, but I'm covered by the VA for life as a disabled veteran. So no biggie there. And Ill be in school full time so this can keep the lights on. Definitely was trying to avoid getting back into line-haul work, especially nights, as I now detest night driving with a passion. A friend of mine was trying to get me into OD, but I'd have to bag and chain..things I definitely have no more desire to do.
This gig seems pretty sweet. Only thing I do not like is their all auto fleet.
Drove an auto Peterbilt today and I have mixed reviews. It was pretty cool to hear the truck apply engine brake and downshift on its own. But the truck has zero power, so good luck merging, even when empty.
Trying to brake then accelerate, nightmare and the truck seems to get confused.
Backing up with that thing is tricky to get used to, and it is rough from a dead stop.
Tried backing under a trailer, and it slammed so hard into the kingpin, I thought it would snap..The entire morning my right hand was fidgeting to grab and split gears..Something about shifting, I love.
Well I start working Monday, so I'll keep you updated as I go..The tester said I was one of the most safety oriented driver he has tested in a long time.
Last time I drove was last October 2013, and today we had to run a local delivery..Nailed a 53 into the dock in one go, no pull-ups or resets. Pretty good for a rusty old guy. Thought my backing would be #### since I can count on both hands how many times I have dragged a 53'. But I didn't curb it nor were my tandems a mile away..Something felt good today being back in a truck..Just wish I had a 10 speed.
What Good Ol' Centuryclass has been up to.
