Sell the car and get rid of the payment.
Hopefully you put something down on the car originally so you should get enough from the sale to buy a cheap car that you can afford. Your insurance will also go down.
Do you know that diesel is $4.75 per gallon?
His ACTUAL needs........ or things that you think he needs that cost money?
You need to do your research.
Really find out what a typical truck driver makes PER HOUR..... there are much better options in this world to make money...... how many truck drivers do you see living in your local country club???![]()
I want to drive truck!!!

Trucking Jobs in 30 seconds

while that is important, I'm not sure it's quite valid. You have to also measure against how much you can realistically make in other jobs you are qualified for
(or may become qualified for in a reasonable time). The important bit is - can you earn enough in ANY job to cover all your home expenses, and still set aside money for unexpected situations? If they're doing ok on $40K a year (between the two of them), and can take a cut for a year or two to $30K while she works her way back up the earning ladder... I say do it - if you really want to.
Now that I understand Dad is hopefully staying home with the little monster, my objections to Mom driving - never terribly strong in the first place - are pretty much gone. Even if Dad keeps his job, they could now pay for day-care. And in a year or so, the little rat will be in school for half the day anyway.
Sure, there are some jobs Dad could do.. driving ain't one of them. A LOT of jobs are not open because of that. He (I'm guessing) probably lacks the training to get the training to get the training for a decent job that doesn't require binocular vision.
(for the record, my kids are called, variously: Godzilla, Megalon, RatBoy, MonkeyBoy, Snot-sucking pond scum, and dirt ball. They are also (no bias here) two of the greatest kids I know. And they know I know that.)
Amanda - two things:
1) despite what I said above - you and/or your hubby might see if you can find the time to go talk to your local unemployment office. Frequently they'll have on-site training in things like computers. Might be a way for hubby to get out of the factory.
2) My personal plumbing is at least partly external. And I have a pretty good beard. This is not to say I've never seen a lady with a beard (my aunt Sadie comes to mind) but never as full as mine.
Sleep well and follow your dream -
dear Amanda,---hope your doin good today.----The above should have been titled(rationalization).--I dont know how much youve been told that an over the road company driver makes, that is,__how much money you will be able to send home every two weeks? I ask for some of you drivers to please respond to Amanda HONESTLY not some pie in the sky.---how much money do send home every two weeks or monthly?----and remember to include not being paid for hometime,etc.---Please show Amanda how she will pay child support,-support husband,-pay her heath insurance co pay,-make a house payment,-make car payment ,- car insurance,-utilities,-$ for phone calls home,-some food and things for herself,-food etc. for the house.,babys needs, and taxes on income.--This will be a fun exercise in home eonomics and is ment to help Amanda make a sound decision, based facts not wants.---NOW, How many miles a days will Amanda need to drive to provide for the above? Factor in 4 or 5 unpaid days off per month including the time it takes to get home, and include the unpaid or under paid down time and layovers. Then guess how much sleep she will get IF she gets that many miles?--And remember while schooling and training ,(8 to 12 weeks) income will be?------Please no BS,.If you would like participate in this exercise it will be of great value to Amanda. Because, she does not have the hands on experience to create this kind of spreed sheet. Does anyone out want to take on this exercise?--I would happily do it. but,i think it would be more valuable if the info came from someone else ,not the person who asked the question,me.I admit I am a little bias.---I think our Amanda would like to her from you.but, never having been out here ,she doesnt know what questions to ask.----sincerly ,just hopen for the best outcome for Amanda and her family.

I can tell that your family and your child are very important to you, and that is why you are exploring career options.
Best of luck to you and your family in whatever you decide. -

Amanda,
I do encourage you in seeking a driving job and yes it is difficult working and raising a child. I don't know anybody who says that they are happy making the amount of money that they are earning. There are some people who are comfortable making the amount they receive but they do want more. Paying bills, credit cards, rent, food, and the ever increasing cost of fuel makes it difficult for everybody. What you think that the child needs are it is real simple but yet we, as parents, think what the child should have, is a need. When I asked my wife what she needed, her response was long and lengthy, but I was able to get this out of it. "I need a roof over my head, food in my belly and you home as much as you can." The wants, are something that either is saved up for or just a dream to have.
Yes, 22K is not much. Are you worth more? You are FREAKING right you are. You want more, who doesn't? So let us look at what you do have first and slowly work your way from there. When I'm worried and I can't sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep. When my bankroll is getting small, I think of when I had none at all. And I fall asleep counting my blessings.
The problem that we as Americans have is that, we WANT things and we want it now. We don't do what is necessary to get it. You have to WAIT, be patient, cut corners, and save. Amanda, I have no doubt that you, as a mom and a parent, will provide for the needs for your child. You will fight a grizzle bear to protect your child. You are Mom.
You will do what you HAVE to do, to fulfill the NEEDS of the child. Just make sure that their wants are truly needs.
Good luck to you and be safe. -

What some tend to forget is that there are local driving jobs that will get you home every night and many pay as well if not better than OTR.
Many routesales drivers make 50-60k a year, work 6 days a week and are home every night. Just understand that you are working as well as driving. 10-20 stops a day, invoicing, merchandising and oh yeah.... humping the product, pushing handcarts and pallet jacks.
There are also flatbed jobs for lumber companies that are local and will afford you nightly hometime, they may not pay as well as routesales but definitely more than 22k. You can find some local jobs that pay $14-18/ hr.
If you can get in with Old Dominion as a city driver they start you at $20/hr and you're home nightly. So there are viable options that will let you drive and see the hubby and little one.
Good Luck! -
Hi amanda,I am not sure if this is up your alley or not, but I my self have done the factories, started when I was 18, I did not care for them . I have for the most part done home care for the last 17 years as an aid, I have done other jobs to, post office, other factories, nursing homes, as the only trouble is it is a major burn out field. I went to LPN school at a local boces, and in 13 1/2 months, and tons of studying later I was on my way. Back when I went it cost about 7000.00 to go but I increased my pay by about 6 dollars an hour I still do home care. I mention this because there was some factory workers there, aids, home makers farm workers, tax preparers, you name it. It is a lot of work and some tests I litterally studied 22 hours for, the course is jammed, 3-4 tests a week, homework and care plans, but about 3/4 of the people worked full time, and still made it through fine, they just had to adjust there shift at there present employer. Student loans are avalible, also some government assistance according to your income and I also receieved help from our local work stop. I dont know if you have any interest in this field, but it is a fast way to make more money and earn a proffesion, you would start out making at least 14 dollars an hour, some states pay more and you would be able to be home with your little one. On the other hand when he turns 13 you might wish you where out on the road LOL. I know all about jobs being slim, hubby has a ruined dac report so no trucking company will hire him, he has 11 years of factory experience, and he has been looking for work for 2 months now!!! I my self would also like to drive truck, but I wont until my kids are gone. I wish you the best of luck
