Hi all. I just started with May Trucking today and thought I'd share my experience. To let you know, I went to driving school years ago, but didn't start driving until now. May had me go through a refresher course (40 hours), which helped a lot! No regrets there. :smt023
I am doing my initial training at the Phoenix terminal/yard. It is a small facility, but run by good people. Seven guys showed up for class, six newbes and one with some experience. We started with paperwork, of course, and a drug screen. Actually, they did the drug test at their location, which I thought was good. It beats hauling everyone to a doc's office and waiting for hours.
The head of safety took us out for a driving and backing test, one at a time. It was a combination of road and interstate in a newer Pete 387, 13 speed. The steering radius wasn't as sharp as I thought, so leaving the yard was interesting. I felt like a large animal trying to get out of a very small cage. Once I got use to the truck, it was smooth, unlike the driver. After the road test, we went back to the yard for the backing test. They had some 50 gallon drums that we had to back into at about a 70 degree angle. The tester stepped out and told me what he expected, than he sat backed and laughed....I mean watched. He really likes it when drivers G.O.A.L. It was interesting since there were trucks moving around the yard, but all went well. Unfortunately, we lost at least two in that process. One had a problem on the road test and one with the backing. Both nice guys, so I hope it works out for them. May told them that if they get retrained, they can come back. I think one will take them up on it. The last guy was testing when we left, so we will find out how he did on Tuesday.
They took us out to lunch and finished the day with paperwork.
It sounds like they are VERY safety conscience and they don't play around when it comes to log books. It is either done right, or not at all. All in all, they seem to be good people and take their jobs seriously, but in a relaxed way.
After researching just about every company, I am really excited about starting my new career here.
More to come....I hope![]()

It's good to see a new thread on May least from a new to the co. side.
It looks as if you choose one of the better ones out there.
Best of luck on your journey and do keep up with your exp. posts I'm sure there will be a few wannab's looking at them.

GREAT to hear ! ! !
I am looking to start soon and I am in the process of trying to find a good company to start with.
Thanks for the info -
Muauauaua!
this can be fun - I start Orientation with May this coming Tuesday (would be Monday, but there's some stupid holiday in the way). Assuming they don't sent me home (can't see why they would, but y' never know), I'll be training shortly thereafter.
Will post my experiences here too, if Drivefor5 doesn't mind. -
Keep that attitude and you'll do fine

Good luck on your adventure

Hey Lurch,
Been reading your posts here and am curious why you chose May.
Thanks

To be brutally honest, they were not my first choice. But I screwed up and missed my opportunity to go with that one.
I am not interested in a newbie mill - though I do have pre-hires from one or two. Ideally, I'm after a company with about 1000 (or fewer) trucks.
Read a LOT of threads here, and on other boards. Look at safety stats.
May has a relatively low percentage of complaints.
They'll let me drive western 11 (I'd prefer western 10, but understand they have to drive in Kalifornia, so I'll live with it)
cents per mile is pretty good for a newbie. Not great, but better than a lot of other places I could work.
They are don't touch the load (IIRC - doing this from memory). One of the other offers I got was 100% fingerprint. Nothing wrong with touching the load, but I want to be paid for it, and these other guys don't do that.
Orientation is local - about 20 minutes from my house.
They don't have a flat requirement for time training on the road. If your trainer thinks you are ready in 2 weeks, that's fine. If he keeps you for 4 weeks, that's fine. Time based requirements are meaningless - if you can't pick it up in 4-6 weeks (and you know there are those who can't), you are still turned loose on the road. (huh - a thought just hit me - I wonder if this is part of the reason we hear so many unhappy drivers...)
Note: No mention of how many miles I'd get, or home time. Two reasons: 1) I never asked 2) because I don't care. Well, I do, a little. But this job is not something I'm looking to use to become the next J.P. Morgan. $500/week take home is plenty for my purposes. And, yes, I'd like to be home every other week, but the kids are teens - they can stand being away from me for longer than that. Neither case is mind-numbingly important, though.
One downside to May - at the moment - they do not have APUs on their trucks. At the moment, I'm looking for ways to deal with this. I don't need to heat the cab (1) I like it cold and 2) I have a VERY good sleeping bag), but I do like the ambient temp to be about 65 when I'm sleeping. I'll deal with it, either way. -
Cool, thanks for the reply, don't mean to be nosy but we seem to have a lot of the same things in mind as far as trucking and jobs go.
I have accepted an offer (pre-offer) from them and hope to be going on the road about mid-june. Would be sooner but the wife and I are taking an anniversary trip (celebrating our 25th) and I dont think i better miss that. If I did, my nads would be adorning the front of the truck, lol.
Hope to see ya on the road

no worries, Mate. I'm always glad to explain my reasoning. Had to all my life - Dad would make me list my reasons when I said I wanted something.
25th! good on you! My 25th is in October
and if I miss it, there won't be anything adorning the truck - or me, for that matter. She'll probably nail 'em up over the front door as a warning to others... -
