Does a person have to attend a school in their home state (where they have their operator license) to get their CDL? I ask because RI only has a couple of CDL schools and nearby CT and Mass have some decent schools and prices.

I'm guessing the schools in Mass and CT would have to bring students to the RI DMV for testing.

You can go to school anywhere. You will likely get your cdl in the state where the school is and then transfer it to your home state. I live in Florida, got mine in Missouri. Used the hotel as my address in MO. When I came back to Florida, I traded Mo for FL. Its that simple.

Thanks Roadrealtor. I was thinking a person could transfer the license seeing the number of company sponsored training. Did you look at schools in FL? Who do you drive for now?

You have to check into the laws in your home state. I know that to transfer your license to Mass. From another state will require you to test again in Mass. Or have at least 2 years recent experience with cdl

Ok there is 1 school that does CT/MA/RI as they have schools there and I know for a fact they also take students from NY.

Now the way it worked for the NY people they go to school in CT but get their permit in NY and test in NY. The school charges to take the truck to NY for the driving test part. If you fail the first time or more you have to pay again to have the truck brought to NY on testing day.

Now could they use a CT address? Their license shows a different state and if living here in CT it would need to be transferred with in 30 days to be legal so how do you show a CT address to get a permit?
I have seen posts of people signing on with trucking Co's for their CDL but had to get a permit & test in their home state.
So check with your home DMV on how it all will work but a guess you will need to do everything in your home state.

some states allow you to have a foreign address on your drivers license or permit, Indiana, Missouri, and I think a few others. the waiver in Indiana is a very long piece of paper

I had a Wayne County (IN) Sherriff stop me while walking once, ID'd me and then almost arrested me for having a Missouri Address on my Indiana Drivers License. I explained to him that there is a waiver where you can do that. he later learned I was telling the truth. personally, I think he should know the laws of his state

I believe that for Ohio you have to have an Ohio address to get a CDL. Going to school in Ohio kept things simpler for me as I did not have to worry about having to transfer my license.
