Large technology stopped it but people have changed as well. Now there are so many scams that come with stopping on the side of the road!

Over a million not sure how much wish I would have kept track. But I've put over 300,000 on a couple of trucks and drove for 18 years. 2 at fault accidents 1 in 2000 and 1 in 2012 both minor but still stupidity on my part. Except for a little time in freight and groceries it been mostly OS/OW.

I know this post is old but I'd like to make a point here. It might have been covered already because I did not read the old postings, sorry. My point is a drivers safety standing should also be measured in years when driving local. There are a few of us that do not go by miles but by time and years. My company gave out once a year a safe driving belt buckle and a good healthy safety award (cash)which I got 10 years before they closed the terminal. It's much different and the driving skills should be recognized for in the city of driving a oversize tanker truck. Even if it's not an over size truck and trailer it's still 80,000lbs a driver maneuvers all day long.
It really flipped me out when I heard a boss at a different type of trucking terminal say they do not count this type of driving as experience. I would like to see him or another type of his drivers drive the same way we do. Not only should it be counted but realistically it should be looked at for the skill it really takes.
We had some drivers that we called legends. I knew 2 of them personally and they drove out of Portland OR. My company took more than just speeding tickets or accidents or incidents. They included cross dumping of product in the wrong tank, any spills or mishaps out of the ordinary and these two drivers had over 30 years each safe driving and were spotless with their record. No calling in sick and not even a scratch on the trucks they drove. I believe it takes a whole lot of skill to drive gasoline in the city. If a driver had a cross dump we all knew it right away. It's a close community and we all knew each other even if the drivers were out of the Seattle terminal.
During our hiring of a new driver one of the requirements was a record of a year of city driving of gasoline delivering to stations in town. Not much consideration was taken for OTR experience. With a little training just about anyone can drive OTR. But it takes more to haul gasoline. Not saying I'm a super trucker, far from it, but you have to know more laws with the product than any other driving job I have had.
Just saying do not disregard these drivers that every day they fight traffic to deliver 6 or more loads of gasoline. The good ones you can not tell by talking with them because they are very humbled and to not brag about what they have done.JoeyJunk, tinytim, bottomdumpin and 3 others Thank this. -
"Son (Insert chuckle) talk to me when you get around 5 million, I was passing my 2 million mark why your dad was still chasein your mom."
He taught me alot even if at times I did not want to learn it, once in a while it took the back of his hand on my head to get my brain back where it should of been. He has been gone a while now but what he taught me and the values he left I will keep for a lifetime. Sometimes I wish I could go back to those times of us driving the back roads of Alaska, wish I was old enough then to understand how precious that time really was.bottomdumpin, farmboy73, Rock 'n Roll Relocater and 1 other person Thank this. -
I would've had well over a million by now, but I've been local too long and the 100 mile days runnin around town just don't seem to add up. I probably have about 100,000 miles in reverse, though!
mountaingote, johndeere4020 and Fajo Thank this.
