3 Men Die When SUV Crashes Into 18-Wheeler

HOUSTON -- Three men were killed when their sport utility vehicle slammed into a moving 18-wheeler early Friday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the collision happened at the intersection of Westgreen Boulevard and the Katy Freeway feeder road at about 2:30 a.m.

"It is very catastrophic," Sgt. S. Wolverton said.
The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban ran a red light and crashed into the 18-wheeler, detectives said.

"(The Suburban) struck the side of the 18-wheeler, went completely under the 18-wheeler," Wolverton said. "It ripped the entire top of the Suburban off of the vehicle. The three Hispanic males in the Suburban were pronounced deceased at the scene."

Investigators said the driver was 23 years old and the passengers were 21 and 22 years old. Two of the men were decapitated, detectives said. Their names were not released.

Wolverton said the Suburban was traveling at a very high speed.

"I would estimate at least 80 (mph) and possibly 100 (mph) or faster," he said. "They were going really fast."

Detectives said there were no eyewitnesses, but they planned to look at video from cameras placed near the intersection. They said the wreck was one of the worst they had ever seen.

"I've seen some bad wrecks, but this ranks right up with as bad as it gets," Wolverton said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured. Officials said there was 38,000 pounds of material inside the 18-wheeler's trailer.

The intersection was closed until about 7 a.m. while detectives conducted an investigation. They conducted skid tests to try to answer some of their questions.

He did nothing wrong and he gets an accident on his DAC. Fault does not matter to DAC. Truck driver should sue SUV driver's estate for emotional distress.

This may be one of those rare occasions where he's not held to blame by the company. As cynical as I am, I can't see how this can be labeled 'preventable'.

Yah, the accident will probably appear in the DAC, but if I were on the board, it would be definitely labeled 'non-preventable'

As for the yay-hoos in the SUV... I feel some sympathy for the families. As for the occupants - it's evolution in action.
