I've had better luck with penske than ryder a far as truck reliability. Both companies sometimes they don't have the truck you want on the day you want it. If it's critical I reserve the truck for the day before and sometimes eat a day's rental. We get a MAJOR discount through a trade organization that has negotiated rates with Penske, what's called an NRA account. Try and get yourself on one of those. Ryder's electronic paperwork is better tho.

Why limit yourself to the majors? Where are you located? I'm near Atlanta and have a dozen places nearby that rent semi trucks.
Time in business has less to do with you paying your rental bill on time and more to do with letting you loose with one or more $75-150k trucks. My advice would be to approach a smaller or regional company and get creative. As-in, offering to sign longer terms and/or possibly do a trial rental period to establish trust for bigger business later on. -
I have an account with Ryder, they wanted two tears of P&L statements, financials, credit check on the business princpals, everything except my first born LOL! I also have an account with AIM Nationlease, they are family owned with only 38 locations and easier to deal with then Ryder or Penske, but have plenty in the NY/NJ/PA tri-state area and are a member of the Nationlease group which gives them nationwide and Canadian service locations. I have both just to be sure I can get a rental when I need one, I need a single axle due to the short neck on my trailer so it is a gamble if they will have on in stock when I break down.
