Hello all, i'm thinking about buying a truck/trl and becoming an owner operator, will be booking the freight myself from the load boards, $60-70K max
I would like to get either cascadia 2010-2011 detroit-cummins or a volvo 670 cummins is my preferred choice , drove volvo's for quite some time but parts availability and prices scare me
I'm looking at reliability standpoint as well as fuel mileage, manual is my only trans choice 10-13spd, no auto's , will be pulling dry box , need suggestions on which one to get, will buy new and hoping it'll last me long time, utility/grate dane or something else ?
I've been driving for past 15 yrs but have hard time making up my mind
BTW , will buy it in spring time after reg renewals and have very good credit (806) with zero debt ,have 10% down but really like 5%, advice on where to go for credit and % i may get always welcome
All the suggestions are appreciated
Thank you
Advice on truck and trl please

Before the idealists show up and tell you that you don't have enough money, I'll give you a few things to think about. Who's authority are you going to run under? If your own, you will need about $20,000 to set it up and get it running. Figure that you will have to drop about $10,000 into that used tractor in the first few months to outfit and repair whatever arises. The trailer is easy if you buy new, you should qualify for 5% financing without any trouble. If you are frugal with your money and get decent rates, you should be able to pull it off but you will definitely be starting out in the rears.

"semi" retired Thanks this.

I do have my own authority , everything is set up, have ins $ as well, extra $ for repairs too , only can't decide about tractor
Friend of mine is driving cascadia as says it's noisy and i like quiet trucks, i'm leaning towards volvo, most likely 2012
Any idea how much is there room to negotiate on used trucks and trls ? i bought cars and used truecar as base negotiation but nothing commercial wise
Going broke is not an option -
There is room to play on pricing when dealing with most dealers and it depends on a lot of things , look for a dealer that does fleet sales as they do not need to make their years profit on selling 1 truck or trailer.
Look around the country as well as locally for the make / model you want right now some wicked deals on NEW CASCADIAS in Michigan compared to other states -
Hi Rodd, since you said the "V" word, the conversation may as well stop here. Freightliner is a great truck to start out with. Plenty of good deals. Volvo will be nothing but a headache. Make sure you do the financing through your credit union or bank. When things get rough, which they will, you have a better chance of talking to them. I've always been a Pete guy, but plenty of KW's out there, and they are nice quiet trucks. I know you won't listen, if you've made up your mind, but you couldn't pick a worse time to go into O/O. Best of luck.

I found a nice (i think it is but didn't see it in person yet ) 2013 cascadia with 13 spd and cummins isx , 290K on the clock (still under warranty) for $86 grand and that's asking price

Son looked at a 2013 CASCADIA the other day 447,000 miles asking $88,900.00 ( was in a team operation ) they also had a 2012 with 393,000 miles for $81,000.00 remaining warranty on both + new tires all around.
He then found a 2013 KW T700 235,000 miles remaining warranty and 90% rubber for $78,000.00 on his way home he offered $70,000.00 supposed to hear back by Friday -
Awesome deal at $70K if they go for it
The cascadia i'm talking about needs tires (just found out)and seller is willing to let it go for $82K , says he had offers at $80 but passed on them
One thing worries me, he's a 2nd owner and bought it 2-3 months ago, roughly put 30K miles on it, there may be something wrong with that unitFLATBED Thanks this. -
where about's are you located ?
