Hello all,
I recently decided to get my CDL and start with B to get a local job and then my A eventually, but i received a text from a CDL school about recruiting for jobs. So since I am interested I called them and found out some information. Guy on phone says that I get hired before starting school and the companies help with paying for school. Well after meeting with them a few times, im feeling uneasy about it and I was really excited before. The second guy tells me I dont get hired until after I finish school, but the instructors help you fill out applications and stuff for the carriers.
Also I have to finance about $6800 before I even start school or have any job offers, this might be normal but I dont know, and in my position right now thats pretty steep. They did say the carriers offer tuition reimbursement, is this true?
The schools name is "The CDL School" in miami, FL. If anyone can help me with information on this subject or maybe a better path to becoming a truck driver, please help me, it would be greatly appreciated

i cant help with the shcool in miami, FL. however there are alot of strater companies(sni, werner, swift, usxpress, western express{others as well}) they all pay for your schoold, you just have to commit to 1 year of working with them.
-
yeah I have no problem committing for one year at all, so I just have to go directly to the company?
-
yep, some require you to have your CDL A Permit. some dont, just call and ask. put in your year and find better.
-
I have my permit already just need airbrakes endorsement
thanks man -
You can do it any way you wish. Pay for yourself, and be free and not tethered by a contract (other than a real student loan), or you can sign up with a company, they will train you, and you pay them back, and you stay x number of months to meet your obligation.
For me, I always preferred to do it on my dime. But many cannot afford the price tag of $2,000 to $15,000 for some schools. Just be sure of you really wanting a driving job.
Now all the instructors can rally do is show you how t fill out a trucking application, heck you CAN DO THAT yourself...NAME< ADDRESS PHONE NUMBER, the go back 10 years of employers. DO NOT LIE on your application, DO NOT MAKE UP THINGS!
Be honest, get a copy of your DMV record.
Some companies may pay you for schooling, ONCE THEY HIRE YOU, it's like an extra few dollars each week in your check. You leave, so does that extra money.
Good luck, I cannot think of anything else right now.Chaps Thanks this. -
If you can afford to do it on your own, you will be a whole lot better off as G. Anthony stated above. If you go through a company, you will have to serve out your year no matter how miserable you may be in order to get your schooling paid for. Better not to indenture yourself if you don't have to.
Lonesome Thanks this. -
Check out Prime maybe, they have their own CDL school and pay you *not much* to go to it. I was all set to go with them before other avenues opened for me, if you head over to the Prime section of the forum there is some good info to be had.
There are other companies that have schools also but I dont know who exactly, Knight and Swift do I'm pretty sure but at least on this forum people seem happier at Prime than the other two.
Not a horrible way to get a CDL, if you dont feel like paying a huge amount up front. -
I believe Millis has a school.
-
Not that I endorse choosing swift over my current company but melton doesnt have a cdl school either, by any means but I hear good things starter company wise and you're not tied down to them if you go through their CDL school to get your full class A. I do think they're better than us express and Werner however to each there own.
