I'm strongly considering going to truck school and hitting the road. At this point about all I know is what I've read on this and other trucker forums, but am leaning towards flatbed. Supposedly the physical work requirements will help me not become a slug, no offense to any slugs out there ;) Also I read that it pays slightly better than pulling a box.

Pay level will be a big part of my decision in what company(s) to apply to, but also, what FB companies are 1) diversified in their customer base and 2) better able to withstand a drop in the economy if/when that happens.

Any suggestions or experienced direction will be appreciated.

TMC or Maverick are both good companies. If I would go over the road I would go TMC but you need to be 23 to work for them. The only reason is because they have the nicest trucks. Maverick is also a good company, and they have dedicated glass divisions that make a little more than normal flatbed. They pay a little more than TMC, but TMC offers a percentage of load (starting at 26% I think) which ends up being more than CPM in the end. Both would be good companies to work for.

Maverick has their own CDL school. Check the website.
