Anything for a controversy. After the Michael Brown fiasco that the media created, I pay as much attention to what they say as I do a car that is travelling down a road 2 miles away from me. Not that i paid them much mind before but...

But can you light the tap water on fire?

And since when did we start calling produced (salt) water brine? Brine is the stuff that we get at a brine station to take to oil rigs and frac jobs. We mix it with fresh water to get certain "pound" or "#" brine. Do you guys do it differently up there?

when i read this thread i assumed you were talking about the oil spill in the Yellowstone recently only to go back to the link after reading the thread and realize it is yet another spill.

the even worse being salt water. saltwater spills are harder to clean up and reclaim than oil spills. especially when introduced into a water source.

link to the Yellowstone oil spill

I hate hearing these things, certainly a black eye to the industry.

a follow up article on the Yellowstone spill from another source and they actually used bbl figures in this one

in the oil industry these days a bbl is always 42 gallons

btw thanks flightwatch for making me swat my monitor...lol

when i was in water hauling we normally called salt water or "brine" production or produced water. and occasionally would say salt water. don't typically call salt water brine around here.

Well a SWD is a salt water disposal, but brine is clean water with salt added for a drilling rig or a pulling unit.

I hauled produced water to rigs all the time. The salt content is so high in the Bakken it is equal to brine water.

The reason that so many salt water disposals get hit by lightning is due to the same thing. A tank full of Bakken produced water attracts lightning better than lightning arrest systems

The reason wby the extra B is in Bbl for barrel is unknown. The old blue barrel theory is probably the closest but officially, blue barrel or Bbl is a rumor but to me, makes perfect sense

MBI hauls produced water to frac tanks at their yards and turns around and sells it as brine water. Talk about a racket. Paid to haul off to disposal but keep it to sell again lol

bakken production water can be very salty. iv hauled wells that were 11lbs per gallon water. fresh water is about 8.3 lbs per gallon.

as far as collecting salt water to haul back to the oil company's. its common practice normally the water is not "sold" but just trucked twice. company's i have worked for in the past stored water from wells that were 10+ lbs per gallon. they didn't charge a water fee for the heavy water but would charge for disposal of the water when it was collected and then when a rig needed some heavy water they would truck it back to them for a trucking charge. witch still ends up cheaper than chasing to 10 different wells to get several loads of heavy water when a rig calls needing a few 1000 bbl's of heavy water.
