Can a company mandate using sleeper status during 10 Hour Break

The guy admitted to LEO's on the scene that he'd been awake for 24 hours. You don't need to know anything about CDL regs to know he had no business driving a truck in that condition.

IIRC that's something the press came up with after the LEOs looked at his elogs. And yep, if he'd been up that long he shouldn't have been driving. None of that is the point.
The point is that if you don't log what a reasonable non-CDL type would consider to be proper rest, you could very well be hanging yourself. -
That was the point I was trying to make. Not for an incident at the shipper but later on down the road. Isn't filling out your logbook to the letter of the law imperative to your freedom in case of an accident where someone is seriously hurt or killed? At the very least, getting caught by your company doing it incorrectly could cost you your job.
I've seen the ads and read on here about lawyers that specialize in going after truckers that have been involved in serious accidents causing injury or death. You can't say they aren't looking for exactly that sort of thing. -
a log book is a legally binding document that when you sign it, or electronically approve it, states that everything you have put on that document is accurate and correct. And it will be used against you in a court of law.

Ok, let me tell you what I know. I know the FMCSA requires you by federal law to log it like you do it. And I know you just said your transportation manager told you to log line 2 when you are in the sleeper. Sounds to me like you are the one with the problem not him. Yes, 10 hours off duty is sufficient to satisfy the reqs, but I know if that is all you ever show then DOT will start to want to see hotel receipts and the like, or ask a ton of questions about where you've been sleeping on the road. Stuff like that throws red flags. So it is up to you how to log it, but for me I'd rather take an extra 5 seconds out of my day to show the sleeper time if it means keeping the law man off my back even once.

Geez, 196 posts, and we are still at no point, as many of us seem to log it our way, not the DOT way. Seems to be also, the newbies are still telling us old timers that we know sht.

I log atleast 8 hours of my 10 in the spleeper berth. Within my 14, I log OFF-DUTY for any reasonable length of time that I am doing anything that is not job related. I log ON-DUTY, for all time that I am doing something job related,
How is that not the DOT way? I log it like I do it. -
When you are on your break, and you change your status, even from sleeper to off duty, or vise versa, you are on duty. Making a log entry is work related. You just ended your break. Start over!
See, it all depends on just how anal you want to be about things. -
I get your point on the extremity of analism.
But NO Inspector or Ecnforcement Officer would expect us start our 10 all over, because we we would have to go ON-DUTY to switch from OFF-DUTY to SLEEPER BERTH, or visa versa. It takes less than 15 seconds to draw those lines.
