    I have never done a semi but i have totally redone numerous boats and cars over my lifetime.

    To me a truck is a lot easier especially if it is not a show piece.

    Painters are crazy with their prices I know i can buy the best marine epoxey to paint it and not have 1500 into materials

    If the truck body is in good shape i can sand and prime and sand and paint a truck and sleeper and hood in 3 days than add another day to paint the doorjams and put the hardware back on.

    I just finished working on a 44 foot sailboat reglassed and painted top to bottom huge job so I have been around the block. A truck doesn't have a 100th of corners and edges and hardware to remove like a sailboat has.

    Hey i know not to doubht you as you been in this for some time and you do all your own repairs just hate to have to constantly fix stuff especially if you are busy or out on the road and have to pay some Numbnuts 130 an hour to work on it and possibly screw it up.

    So i will start putting some numbers together if i can get some people shooting parts prices at me

    Hey HOSS,IM NOT trying to RAIN on your PARADE or anything, but It doesnt REALLY Matter WHAT all you change these are HEAVY EQUIPMENT TOOLS,things will BRAKE and then BRAKE again,why buy a truck for 30 grand to put over 70 grand into to me it doesnt make any sense,BUT HEY IF IT MAKES YOU LAUGH,IT TICKLES ME PINK LOL,

    The important thing is to have the CASH ON HAND IN A UNTOUCHED MAINTENANCE ACCOUNT for when that time does COME!

    I appreciate your comments woreout.

    The axle i was thinking replace after hearing Rollingcoals problem with his steering tracking after replacing the kingpins as i have had the same thing happen on a van i replaced them on years ago drove me crazy

    I would just as soon rebuild parts if it is considerably cheaper and the end product is fine

    I think it is a Eaton Fuller 13 speed

    The rearends i dont know model either. is there a huge price difference from one model to the next?

    no problem i have thick skin and can take the good or the bad.

    I know from running my old marine business that stuff is always going to break but if you take a nd totally rebuild something you have eliminated 90 percent of future repairs for 5 years

    I am thinking a month off and rip the truck apart I think i could do it in less but the mods i would want to do to the sleeper would take a little ingenuity time.

    What they get for those moded sleepers is frikin ridicolous

    Eatons are cheaper to go through than rockwells. And there is some difference if they are 402 or 404 Eatons. The trans it will have a number like 16913 the first two are torque rating, the second is series and last two are number of forward speeds. The bigger the first two the higher parts will be.

    Most people dont don't realize you can bore the axle eye and bushing it. The bushing is actually harder than the axle material itself. Cost is 300 per side. Course if the beam is bent it's a mute cause. The last axle beam I bought was just that the center beam and was 3500.

    Another thing to consider is even doing your own work there are certain aspects of the job you simply are not equipped to do. I know you worked on stuff to know just cause a guy has the equipment to do a job doesn't mean he has the knowledge. So it could get real costly and bad aggravating knowing you just spent loads of money on say boring an axle and it isn't true. Or you took your trans to eaton had it built and for whatever reason it goes down in two months. Yea you may have warranty but downtime is costly. It also won't pay a tow bill. (Warranty) I do agree though things cost less to rebuild before they shoot craps. So there is where the gambler in you has to make the best decision you can.

    Its gonna be hard to get that truck under 28 because it's a pre emission KW. Them and the Pete's are pure gold right now. I'm a CAT man through and through but the 12.7 is a good engine and has a bigger following thus making it more expensive. I'm not sure if they still do but we used to buy Pete gliders and build them ourselves that may be a thought.

    Not sure if it has been mentioned, but you can insure a glider for what its worth. You may have trouble getting full coverage on an old truck you sunk $70k into.

    Very good point. If something happens to my 359 I won't get near what I have in it.
